3rd gear slips....clutch replacement or bigger issue???
Looking at purchasing a 95' 993 from a non-Porsche dealer. Dealer took the car in on a trade (3 owners) as a favor to the owner's friend...so the story tells...dealer has been very honest about potential issues with the car. Has stated that the clutch may need to be replaced soon. Also said that 3rd gear will slip a little..outside of a clutch job, is there anything else I should be concerned with? How much should I anticipate spending on a clutch job? Price seems right even with a clutch job and the car is nice. Thanks for the feed-back!
Asked if the car leaks or burn oil, dealer said he thought he saw a little oil accumulating in the belly pan, but nothing significant and didnt know how old.

Second that! Get it inspected(PPI) at a garage of your choice before spending any money on this car.

I've had two cars in the past which popped out of gear (literally the shifter pops into neutral from, in my case, 2nd). Both times the transmission needed to be rebuilt. As stated above, get a PPI so you can find out for yourself.

I wouldn't expect the gear to slip out due to a worn out clutch. Get and inspection and be sure. Has the seller given any explanations for other issues that maybe don't sound quite right?

Does he mean that the clutch slips under acceleration in 3rd gear, or that the transmission slips/jumps out of third gear under acceleration? The first is USUALLY indicative of the clutch going, the second of an internal transmission problem. A good p-cat tech, experienced with 993s, will know right away.

Answering the question on a clutch job, have been quoted locally $2300 by a very reputable independent Porsche shop. This doesn't include replacing the dual mass fly wheel, just light resurfacing.
Hope that helps.....
