Question Litronics, sans actual light.

The other day I pulled my headlamps in order to clean behind the buckets. After replacing them, I noticed that the passenger low beam (Litronics) is out of commission. The high beam (halogen) works just fine. I tried removing and reinstalling, thinking that the connector may have been improperly seated. To no avail.

I did read just about every post I could find regarding Litronics and problems, but fear I may need a new bulb. I could not find a good source for OEM bulbs in all of the threads - does anyone know of one?

This is a complete Porsche Litronics kit that was retrofitted in 1998 by a Seattle-area dealer. Is there anything else to check that I may have missed?

Bulbs are $145 and the same bulb is $195 under the BMW number at Pelican Parts, so you want to be sure it is the bulb. I found a source in Salt Lake City for $80 each in pairs.

I'll swap the bulbs tomorrow - thanks for the tip.

Pete - is that source for OEM bulbs, or aftermarket? If so, what brand are the actual bulbs?

You can usually find new Philips D2S bulbs on eBay for under (sometimes well under) $75 each from reliable sellers.

Is this correct:

- D2S bulbs are for HID lamps that use projector housings

- D2R bulbs are for HID lamps that use reflector housings

Also, what is the currect bulb temperature (in Kelvins) for the OEM Litronics?

Any reason to choose Philips vs. Osram?

Don't know Litronics color temp.
Philips & Osram are both high quality oem HID manufacturers. No preference I know about.
You are correct: D2R ("R" for reflector) is a D2S with an added shield.

The bulbs were GE, made in Hungary. Originals can be Phillips or Osram brands.

The supplier, Reliable, is a supplier of aircraft lighting. www.XeVision.com. They shipped the same day I called, I had them in 2 days via ground UPS.

Be very careful removing the bulbs, as they are fragile and will break a lead if you tilt them when trying to get the clip off. There are tabs that have to be bent away first, a really stupid design.

Check the connector if all contacts are still in place.
It is possible that you have pushed one of the contacts out of the connector by re-installing the headlight.

Thanks Pete.

Gert,
Are you referring to the actual pins within the multi-prong connector?
