San diego is cool..you're right. Me, being a North Californian, am semi-anti-socal by birth though. But Whale's Vagina is a great town (Anchorman quote for those of you who think I'm being gross). Tahoe is nice? I am kinda talking about major cities, but I can imagine that Tahoe is nice. I am sure I missed a lot of great cities, but I was speaking from a worldwide perspective, trying to capture the BIG names in US cities, but S.D def. deserves to be in there.

Ditto that!

Alan, don't diss Venice because of tourist (I can't tell whether you'd actually been there or just tell it's too tourist because someone said so).

During summer, there are lot of tourist but sill you can be totally on your own there, the "tourist snake" wonders around the popular areas but basically if you step only onf block (which in Venice are very small) off of the "snake", you can find litle places to eat pretty good and actually reasonably priced, and don't have to be bothered by lof of people.
Fall, Winter, very early spring are the best times to be there of course since it's much more quiet there but even in summer, if you go outside of the main tourist areas, you can discover real Venice and the real venetian who actually still live there.

I've been there maybe about 20 times during the past few years and love it. Best way to do it is just hang around, "get lost" and see all the tiny alleys etc. That way you can also find the good restaurants locals use (unfortunately you won't get the locals' prices though) and have good meal, in Venice, you can get worst food in Italy but there are really good places too but almosty all the the good places are well hidden.

And, I'm sure those same peole who told you Venice is way too "tourist", they also told you Venice smells? Well, it doesn't. That's a myth Mythbusters would bust in no time.

It was my Ex-GF whos told me.....she traveled around to 50 European citued over hte span of 6 months. She just was overall unimpressed. It put a sour taste in my mouth. I will still probably go see it though. You make it sounds quite nice.

Absolutely right Flying Finn! I have been there about 10 times. I usually go in April or October. Last time was early September this year. It was not overcrowded and the water did not smell. The place is unique. Travel by vaporetto is lots of fun. It is like going back into time!

If you don't go, you will never know what you are missing. No other place on earth like it!

Here is a view from Googe Earth:

Yeap, in all my travels around the world I have never seen a city as beautiful as Venice. Just the architecture alone makes it a must place to visit. Its a magical place indeed.

I know we are getting OT here...but bringing up Venice (lovely city) allows me to pass along a quote I read years ago...its good for a chuckle as one thinks about it...

"Porsche is the Venice of cars...a terrible idea, brilliantly executed"

All I know is that there is an island (Lido Island?) off Venice that we took a ferry to, and they serve the BEST gelato anywhere. Yum.....

The island is called "Lido di Venezia". Agree about the gelato!

Thanks Phil.
