Default How far would you drive for a good mechanic? What makes a good mechanic?

I've had my '95 993 for about a month now. I anticipate driving this car about 3,000 miles a year and everything is up to date service wise. I have pretty much decided to have the service done at a shop that's 130 miles from here. I know this will somewhat of a hassle but I got a great feeling from the shop and the owner.

Does anyone else have a mechanic that far away? Assuming the service is top flight, is it worth the inconvenience? I would think so but I haven't done it yet so I'd love to hear your comments.

While I'm on the subject, what do you think makes a good Porsche mechanic? Off the top of my head, I'd say an enthusiast who drives a Porsche, who has driven one for years, who races (well maybe) and who does what he says he will do in a timely manner. I want someone who knows the car, who can recommend service before I know that I need it and who won't give me back the car needing additional work, at least without informing me.

Thanks!

Jim

"How far would you drive for a good mechanic?" -- I'd tempted to fly ViperBob from Florida to work on my 993 in Seattle....

I'm relatively mechanically inclined and when I find a shop that gives me a "great feeling from the shop and the owner" I'd stick with it.

First, pure honesty. Second, one who you feel comfortable to leave your car with, in other words, one who would take really good care of your car. Third, this mechanic should know the idiosyncrasies of the 993 and maintains a vision of what the scope of work involves. Fourth, a killer lobby with bitchin' magazines

I travel about 100 miles to Ruf to have my car serviced. I have this exactly same feeling here is told about. They know about this certain way of giving you the feeling of being as important as a Rt12-buyer.

Well, side story is that I made the contact to my car via Ruf.

... and sometimes if there is some small issue or time is little I go to the factory in Zuffenhausen. Very great service, but a little little bit depending on the individual.

Best regards,

Felix

i make someone else escort me about 40 miles to my shop. its the only place i've had turn a wrench since i bought it. it helps that they've always got either race prepped 993s or crazy turbo cars, and i've seen three different 959s in there too. and they remember my whole story. i only have one person who cuts my hair also, and for two years...haha

We drive 320 miles to have any of our Porsche's serviced. Hot Springs, AR to Dallas Texas. It's a long way like L.A. to Las Vegas, but worth it.

I'm doing about 100miles to my garage. I used to live near them and I totally TRUST them. That's what makes a good shop. Oh yes and they have all kinds of ways of saving time/money keeping your car on the road. I.e. they are not trying to recreate a new car every time you take it in for a service. When I needed a body shop I went with their recommendation, no questions asked (I had a fantastic job done by that body shop and have used them twice since).

Cheers,

David

Remember, even if it's close and you have to get the work done TWICE, how much time have you really saved? It's best to find the correct place, even if it's a pain.. If you need service from your local Shell station, get a 1985 ford!!

I'm lucky, I have a terrific Porsche-oriented shop close enough to walk home from if there's no one to hitch a ride with after a drop-off. They know both 911s and 944s, and old Mopars, too. I'm very mechanically inclined and have always found that they've done the right thing, with a fair bill. There have been a couple of come-backs over the last 10 years but all have been small.

100 miles for me for a good mechanic. But they charged me 250 to change my front brakes. The next time I went to my local ford dealer and it was 60 bucks for all four and they work great....

Trust. I drive 120 miles to my shop. Wouldn't go anywhere else.
