oil change problem - small filter
Im doing the first oil change on this car. The garage who did this for the previous owner 1 year ago, put the filters on way too tight.
I got the big filter out using a screwdriver and it took a long time.
The little filter under the engine will not budge. I tried channel locks, screwdriver and all it did was damage the filter.
I bought a round filter wrench socket type, but it will not fit up there because the oil return line is in the way.
I tried to remove the oil return line... it will not come all the way out. I loosened the c-clamp above the oil line to give it some play...still it will not budge.
Any help on how to get this damn thing out? thanks

The best tool to use, imo, is the three prong styled wrench, with the longest breaker bar you can fit under the car.
If you've significantly destroyed the filter housing, try to get the prongs onto the top rim of the filter (where the threads are), where you can get a good grip. You may even need to start tearing away at the filter to get to them.

I can get the cap type filter remover past the oil line if I push it in just right. I've never had to remove that oil line to get to that filter. At first it seems like it won't fit, but if you are persistant it can be made to get in there.

Kevin...that is one cool tool and I will have to pick one up.
Kelly... I got it but had to yank hard on that oil line to get it to finally come out.
Next time I may consider paying someone as this may not have been worth the time taken moving all of that stuff just to get to the filters etc.

I had a cap, The cap won't fit period.
In the past I have used waterpump pliers, but it gets ugly and messy
so and bought a strap and the 3 prong.
the strap worked but at the risk of damaging the oil line, it probably won't be my first choice next time.
Haven't used the 3 prong yet, but it's ready for the next go round.

Once you do get it off, you'll tighten the new one properly. Then it shouldn't be such a hassle next time. BTW, my filter cap wrench fits past the return tube in the same manner Kelly described.

I got my filter wrench from Suncoast for the second oil filter. If you need the part number, let me know.
Quite amazing, like others, I must have a collection of about 8 oil filter wrenches from various cars over the years. Of course none of the 7 wrenches worked well for the 993 until I need to buy #8. Lastly do the filter when oil is warm, it is a bit easier to remove the filter.

Here is an inexpensive tool that I bought at a local parts store for under $10. Like Chris said, yours has been in there too long. Once I got mine changed, the first time at 25Kmiles, I never had a [problem removing it using a cap wrench, which does fit up there.

The Porsche part number for the smaller filter is: 000721 920 40. As I recall it was about $25.
Lets us know how you remove the second filter. My first 993 oil change took about 3 hours, about one hour just to figure how to get all 4 wheels off the ground without jacking under engine.

Have used a similar tool as Pete Lech shows since I got the car in '96. Good luck getting out an overly tight fitler. Problem is gonna be if you damage it monkeying around trying to get it out and are FORCED to remove it - whole or piece by piece.

I need to raised the car by driving over 2x6's and jacking each side up with jack stands on each of the 4 sides.
Seems just about everyone jacks under engine with hockey puck, or block of wood and raise rear and have no problems. To me, I have a concern with that unless block of wood/hockey puck is positioned properly to avoid any damage. Maybe one of these days will make it easier for myself and just jack under engine.
