How much money do you want to spend? What's your goal? I have to admit, I kind of cringe every time I see a big heavy amp in a 993. Just seems out of place in a sports car but I'm kind of a track snob.

The friend who sold me my 993 had a nice upgrade done to the factory hi-fi setup. Well, it removed the entire hifi infrastructure but looks pretty stock. ADS plate speakers under the factory grilles, an ADS amp under the carpet in the boot, and an Alpine head unit. It's very nice to listen to.

In general, I think that speaker replacement is job 1, Porsche seriously cheaped out on these. I don't know if I would have installed an amp, maybe that was required when dumping the factory speakers. IMO the factory head units are decent enough, especially for a sports car.

I have an Alpine CDA-9835 Head unit, Focal component 6.5" front, Polk/Momo plate rears, 2x JL 6W0 6.5" woofers in custom boxes [one behind each seat], JL Audio 500x5 channel Amp, and capacitor [also have the XM Tuner and iPod interface for the head unit. It can't be beat. The woofers put out incredible bass...

Here are a few kinda bad pics.

I agree with Ed- first priority is speakers. Everything else is just fine tuning.

I find that most of the non-stock head units look so cheezy/ricer.

RSRs + windows down = we need no stinkin' aftermarket stereo mods!

Honestly, tho, I've looked at a few and they're all too bling-bling for me, screaming "steal me" "steal me". Can't someone else beside Becker make a cleaner design?

I´m really fond of Blaupunkts from the period our cars were current. Nice, clean functional look that looks "Porsche". A bit Becker-style, only nicer in my opinion.
My personal favourite is 126-series, had RDM 126 München in my 3.2 Carrera and now have RDM 126 Kiel in my 993.

I have been in the consumer electronics business for 30 years and there are some basic rules that you can follow to make sure you are getting the best for your money in a car stereo.

1. As stated by a few in this string, spend the money on good speakers!
2. Decide how much you want to spend before you start to spend.
3. Head units by the major manufacturers, in the same price range are pretty much the same from a reliability and sound reproduction stand point. So once you decide how much you want to spend pick the unit that works for you. ie. looks, features and be careful you can operate the controls without having to pull over to do it.
4. Make sure that you use good speeker wire it does make a difference.
5. Normally I would suggest that you have a professional do the installation but the 911 is so easy to work on you should be able to do all of the install yourself.
