last week i changed the door speakers ...
(nervous ... my first mod in my 993 !!)

mine has 3 speakers per door as follows:

one small twister and 2 medium sizes speakers, one a 2.5 inches and the another a 6.5 inches.

I changed the 2.5 and 6.5 with JBL ones, and the difference is GREATTT !!!! like day and night ...

i dont plan to change the original CD player, as is not that bad.
also, a silver unit with blue/red lights in a 993 spartan black dash looks awfull ... (my humble opinion)

the speakers (nokia) are a piece of junk.

now, i have much much better sound.

next project is to change rear speaker and ADD a noise filter to the radio power DC cables, as the engine interferes a little bit with the CD player ..

i guess will have a much than average sound with these simples mods.

cost ... ?? TOP $150 the whole thing .. including a DC filter (12V, 10Amps or more ..... )

easy to do ... even for me ...

I replaced the original CD-210 radio/cassette player with a Panasonic radio/mini-disc (MD) player ages ago. More power/better sound quality and the only major work was transferring the multi-pin radio connector from the CD-210 to the Panasonic. Totally happy; see no reason to switch to CD or add anything else to the stereo.

Go ahead; laugh - I don't care!

ON TIME,

Depending on where you want to source the equipment there are some really good bits out there. Rod Birch is one of the rennlist sponsors and will offer you some good advice and can send you whats needed including some excellent sub enclosures, do a search for rod birch here and see what it turns up.

There is a company in the UK which makes sub enclosures which is closer, google stealthboxz, there is one made especially for the 993 rear foot wells. (I'm not affiliated with them, etc.)

I can recommend the Focal 6.5" door speakers and there are custom fit speakers available which will directly replace the rear shelf speakers, mine are MB Quarts. You can fit an amp under the right hand seat. As for head units the choice is huge, I have a pioneer unit which plays MP3s off a CD. My amp is a Audison SRx3 wich drives the front speakers and when I get around to buying them will power the custom fit subs, but already the system is a massive improvement over the stock system.

Good luck.

Lorenzo,
I just upgraded my stereo from the stock Alpine. I went to Good Guys, they had a liquidation sale. Got 30% off and ended up paying around $300.

I got an Eclipse head unit and Alpine speakers, front and rear. The unit pays mp3's. I load a bunch on a cd and it seems like I have endless music now. It also has a read out that tells me the artist and song. The difference was night and day. This is not a boom boom type stereo but it is certainly adequate for my needs. I wanted to be able to hear the darn stereo when the top was down, now I can. I don't blast my music anyway and prefer to listen to the sweet sound of the motor humming along. Hell, that's why I spend as much on RSR mufflers, thanks again Ron.

So, unless you want to wake up the neighbors when you go by, I am not sure you need to spend a bundle on a stereo to be able to listen to a decent sound. Just my .02 cents and I'd like change.

Different view...

Chuck it all out, remove the speakers and install RS door panels. Then listen to the flat 6 symphony. Music to me

Automotive Entertainment on Wilshire Blvd in Santa Monica does a lot of high end installs. I don't have a Porsche, but I've seen them in there. They installed my Dynaudio separates and Nak in my FJ 60 Land Cruiser.

I HIGHLY recommend the Dynaudios. I had MB Quarts before (stolen along with my Eclipse deck) and the Dyns blow them away. I ran a 5 channel Soundstream amp to them, coaxs in the back doors, and a 10" sub in a custom made sealed enclosure. The sound in the front seat (I went cheap with the Boston coaxs in the back doors) was perfect and listening to music made you giddy and realize how much you've missing this whole time.

As far as head units, Naks are a little fussy, but the understated looks (and price savings over the Mac unit) and sound quality made it an easy choice for the classic mostly metal dash.

I have the premium B(L)ose system in my S4 wagon and it doesn't even compare.

Good luck.

I put a Denison DH100ix in and have Infinity reference speakers waiting to be installed front and rear -- no bling, just good sound.

Speakers fit in standard space so look stock and head unit has a 40 G hard-drive for mp3's so leave the iPod at home.
