My 993 has been my daily driver & only car for 3 months now. My thoughts...

The problem with the 944 and the 928 is they could not compete with the Japanese RX-7, Supra, etc.
Nobody else makes a rear engined car like the 911.
It still has no competition unless you want to switch to a front engined or mid engined car.
If it wasn't for the 911, Porsche might not exist today.
Its ironic that the 944 and the 928 was supposed to be replace the 911.
It doesn't matter which one is a better car.
Its all about marketing and competition.

you're right - the market dictated what it wanted, and the manufacturer responded. in light of this, you can get a great deal on a 944 to use as a commuter! :-)

I checked out a friends 944 and the rear trunk is still not big enough for my job.
Sad to say, I need a 4 door with a big trunk.
I'm expected to haul demo gear to customer sites occasionally
It consists of three big cases.
One 26"x26"x14" case and two 22"x10"x30.5" cases.
I only have $16k to spend and the bimmers in this price range are to old for me.
I'm looking at either a Maxima or an Accord.

great thread steve.
still remember the "gaff tape" diy ya' did ages ago. that was one of my faves too.
btw: i love the way the 993 handles in the wet & crappy weather (when we have it in socal)..... & washing it after is so "zen". kinda' like cleaning up the loft (the next morning) after a great party hee hee.
bol on findin' the right bimmer... check the l.a. market quite a few around these parts.
btw: john d laughs @ snow too.

A question for you daily drivers, particularly those for which this is your only car. Much of what I've read here talks about short trips being a killer on the car. Sounds like you do all of your errands, everything, with your 993, and no problems, particularly no CEL problems. Is this the case?
The reason I ask, is that our "extra car" just died, so until I replace it I am using my 993 for everything the last few months. I worry about all the short errand trips.

Hi Don - my CEL has been on for about 2 years now but it's not a problem at all. I just cover it up with a piece of black gaffers tape and as far as I'm concerned, that light doesn't exist
I use my 993 to run errands, short trips, long trips, any old trip I can think of. If it's nasty out I'll drive the bimmer, but for all other driving I take the 993. If it's a trip to the gas station or a quick run for food, I'll take the 993.

I am getting my first Porsche (911 c4) this week and from reading the postings on Rennlist, I was beginning to think that I was crazy to plan on driving this car as my daily driver.
This thread has made me feel much better about my plan of enjoying this car every day. Although, I don't plan on driving it in the heart of winter which can be pretty severe up here in Canada.
Thanks for the alternate view of the daily driver story!

I have both a 96 Targa and a F250 Super Duty/4x4/V10/Industrical Utility Box/Lift Gate/8800lbs empty, and swap them back and forth for what I am doing. If I need to haul something, or pickup the kids, I take the truck. If I am likely by myself, then the 993. I run the F250 on dual fuel (gas/propane), and its cheaper to run than the 993. In snow, the F250 is a beast. In the sun, the 993 is the beast. Best of two worlds! Only downside is dual insurance...

Wow, this thread is back from the abyss--a 4.5 year bump.
Have fun with your new P-car, 993c4_Toronto. Don't be afraid to drive your C4 in the snow. With some snow tires, they are very sure footed.
