CDR 210 Question
I purchased a CDR 210 from a 996 and put it into my 993. I've heard about the faceplate needing to be adjusted by Becker. After install, there is NO illumination at all. Display is there, but no backlighting. The closest I could find in a search about this was one by Mark in AK back in January.
In his pics, it looks like no illumination at all, is that right? Most of the posts talk about not being able to see it due to different angles, but this appears 'lights out'. Everything else works just fine. Display is there, but no 'orange back lighting' illumination with headlights on. If so, does just the faceplate go to Becker or does the whole unit have to go?
Thanks for all the help.

This is not a matter of the visibility of the display. All CDR-210 with the grey display work in 993's. Visibility is a CDR-220 issue.
I have had exactly the same thing when I installed the European counterpart CDR-21 into my 993.
Many 993 are not designed to switch a radio's illumination.
There is one pin in your radio's connector for a power supply to the illumination.
You have to connect this pin to your power supply for the dashboard illumination.
In fact there are two versions of the CDR-21 and maybe of the CDR-210 as well: one with switched illumination and one where the illumination is always on when the radio is on. Switched is: BE2280, Non-switched is: BE2260. The switched version has shiny buttons.
Best regards,
Felix

You may have a differant prblem that the CDR-220's when installed in 993's....but....
I had to send my faceplate from my CDR-220 to Becker of North America for a modification so I could see it in my 993. These radios were made for 996 and 986’s, which sit lower and at a different angle. What Becker does is change it from a black background with orange digits to an orange background with black letters. The cost is $50.00. Here is a photo of the finished mod and Becker’s address.

That's absolutely right, Chuck, the CDR-220 was an a option after the 993 and is designed for the different dashboard of the 986/996.
The CDR-210 and its other versions of the same frontplate design should not pose any problems, as those radios came in both the 993 and the early 996!
Here is a picture to get the difference straight to the one Chuck postet:
The pin where the illumination power supply has to be connected to should be on the sticker on the radio.
Best regards,
Felix

Ok, I had a chance to check a CDR-21 (BE2280). Illumination there is pin 6 of plug A.
Plug A is the lowest plug to the bottom. There are eight pins:
1357
2468
with pin 8 being the pin to the bottom corner of the radio (where the fuse is).
But there should be a sticker on the radio telling everything!
You might consider a test run of the radio by applying a 12V-battery to pin 4 (permanent +) and 7 (switched +) and 8 (ground/chassis), then turn the radiio on, and further apply the battery to pin 6. The illumination should turn on.
Now, where to pick up power for illumination?
Best regards,
Felix

Thanks for the responses. I can see the panel fine during the day, so no adjustment there needed.
Just no night time illumination, so it must be that pin 6 issue. I'll take it to my installer and have him fix it. I'm adding more to the system, so I get to kill 2 birds with one stone.
Thanks again.

My CDR-210 screen is grey with black numbers/letters when not illuminated. When illuminated it is orange with black numbers/letters. I can take a picture if that would help.

BTW I would like to have that orange illumination even at day time (orange looks better than grey IMHO), so I would like to see how it looks like, before searching for a permanent 12V to connect to A6 connector ...

Thank you so much ! Even if no real difference, I will try to connect this A6 pin to a contact 12V. What do you believe should be the best way to make it ?

The illumination lead goes to pin A6 and if you want the radio to light up when the lights are switched on and adjust for brightness, you need to tap power from the gray/blue ashtray light wire. This was the way Porsche did it at the factory when they ran short of the CR/CDR 210 radios during the 993 run and had to substitute the CR/CDR 220. There is a Porsche TSB on that here: http://www.pcarworkshop.com/index.ph...C_Parts_Guides See #5 in Body and Interior TSB's.
