Default Motorsound airbox covers - what works best?

I don't even own the car yet (not to mention the fact that I have yet to lay eyes on it) but am interested to hear the pros & cons of the Porsche Motorsound airbox cover vs. the Fabspeed open version, vs. anything else out there.

Does anyone have one of these versions that they would like to sell?

Here is a quick pic that TomF shot last night with his 993 in the background:

Personally I have modded the stock airbox on both my 993's by cutting open the entire side with a Dremel. The end result looks like the Fabspeed cup airbox but without the $175 price tag. You can usually pick up a stock airbox on ebay if you want to experiment.

I have also done the same mod for at least 5 other 993's. I do not have emperical data but seat of the pants tells me there is a gain. Plus it sounds great too.

I would agree with Harvey. The Fabspeed box is a flimsy piece of plastic that nets the same result as what Harvey described. My car has the factory motorsound box and I haven't modified it further but I do want to relocate that bellhousing breather hose so it doesn't dump clutch dust into the airbox (what a dumb idea Porsche, what the hell were they thinking?).

More intake sound, no power gain. Follow Harvey's suggestion or just drill holes in your oem box. Much discussion in the archives.

My guess - they were thinking the intake would suck up the dust & it's better to filter it than for us to breath it.

Hi Andreas, if you modify the stock one why not try drilling holes in it 1st? You can always cut the whole face off of it later if you want to. But once you cut it all of the way open......

Cut, drill whatever just don't pay anyone for it.

I had a drilled one when I first bought the car. Really didn't notice much, not even an increase in sound. Then I dremeled off the entire top, didn't notice anything either. Finally, I put back on a stock lid and the car seemed to pull better. I dunno, probably a placebo thing. Don't waste your money on a Fabspeed lid, certainly not worth it. Do the experiment on your own and save a penny.

Andreas...the teaser pictures you showed on an earlier thread showed the engine compartment with a chrome mouth on the air cleaner housing. This is indeed the motor sound air box already on the car. I have this cover and it is great!

Ahh... I thought it looked a bit different! That's great news.

Saves me from showing up on the seller's doorstep with my Dremel and an extension cord.

Andreas -

I recently installed the Motorsound airbox cover . . . and love the sound matched to Robin's RSR's mufflers.

Scott,
How does the cover differ (inside) from the stock one? Did you install it before the RSRs, and if so, how was the sound difference?

Hey Andreas -

The Motorsound cover is just like the stock one, but is the one that has the chrome inlet and many holes drilled in the cover. I installed it the same day as the RSR's . . . so not too sure how they are/sound separately. All I know is that I LIKE IT ! !

Hey guys, just realized I have an leftover airbox (found it while cleaning the garage out). I carefully drilled the holes in it to match the factory version (I had the factory one at the time to use as a template). Since I am looking to snag a 997, I won't have use for it. Let me know who wants it. I will give it away for free, but you will have to arrange/pay for the shipping. I will box it and bring it down to who you want it sent by. First person who wants it gets it.
