Reach behind one of the spokes, if you can feel two ridges running along the back of the spoke, it's solid.

If it is flat with no ridges, it is hollow.

Also, you can look at your valve stem.....if it is metal, you've got hollow spokes.
If it is rubber, the spokes are solid.

Just a thought.....but if his rim was hollow........and with a crack like that that.........wouldn't it loose air pressure and the tire go flat?

No, I think he's serious... and correct. From other posts, IIRC, I have read where people have sandblasted hollow spoke wheels only to end up with sand making noise in the spokes.

IIRC, thought I also saw something about people having them chromed and chemicals being trapped/leaching out.

No offense, but what part of hollow spoke lead you to believe I was kidding? They are hollow all the way through and should loose air. They are similar to the 959 rims of the 80's that were able to inflate/deflate based on the pressure registering through the sensor. Of course they cut all that out by the time the 993 came about but......

I dont think the 'spoke' of the 993 hollow spokes share pressure from the tire. The spokes are indeed hollow, but dont 'communicate' with the inside of the wheel..

Yikes! That's not good to hear.. what am I remembering about sand in the spokes then? Damn... I know I'm old, but hopefully not that old that I remember stuff that never happened!!

Man, I've got to search for that thread about the sand or lose my mind...

Whew... found it...

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...low+spoke+sand

Seems like if the valve stem is not disturbed, there should be no common air connection between inside of the tire and the spokes. I stand corrected... thanks for bringing this detail up, Chris.

Wow!!! What a plethora of information... :-D

Okay so www.wheelcollision.com has this rim for $255. I think that is VERY reasonable....Which one is it though??

H67228 18x10 70mm Swept 5Spk 99336214001 REAR SILVER
OR
H67229 18x10 Swept 5 Spoke 99336214003 REAR SILVER

You know what though...im glad its the RIM and not a body panel...but still fail to understand how it might have happened. I dont even abuse the car...since its been only a month of ownership...

kdurg -- how much are looking to get your rim/tires??? I already have good tires on the car...Bridgestone so-2's

This would have been a good question for Viken to definitively answer...

Mark,

I agree... what a loss to this board, but hope he's happy, whatever he's doing.

The spokes are hollow as is a small portion of the rim but they're not connected by an air passage.

The sand blasting issue is from the metal valve going through the hollow area on the rim. When the valve is removed blasting material can get in the hollow section of the rim and stay there.

Wouaw!!! What a luck that you've seen that in your garage! No idea of how long you drove your car with that crack? This could have lead to a terrible accident! I've never heard of this before with an original Porsche wheel. On my 4S I have the solid wheels, and I think I'll check them quite often now!

It's not the first one. Find out what the offset for the H67229 rim....you need a 40mm offset for the rear on your 98 C4S.

You have PM regarding rims/tires.

Yes, for a wide bodied 993, you will need an 18 x 10 with 40mm offset.
