Part # 993 115 021 90 (Engine Carrier / Rear Engine Support)

Has anyone out there had theirs break? I almost had my motor scraping the ground last week while at Watkins Glen .... The Technician (30 year guy) has never seen one of these carriers break.

Good possibility that mine is bent. Could you give us details on how you repair it? Pics would be good too if you have them.

Never heard of one breaking. Did it break at the solder joint?

Quite a common problem if none standard engine mounts are used. You can get stiffer than RS ones but should only install them with a strengthened engine mounting bracket. It usually fails where the tube (that the engine mounting bolts go through) is welded to the main metal plate of the bracket. Strengthening usually envolves welding a gusset plate there. Have you none standard mounts?

I've also been told that the issue is exacerbated by having the standard tranny mount up front and solid/RS mounts in the rear.

I heard of them breaking (a friend while at the track) and mine was bent and looking bad until it was reenforced. They break or bend right at the mount (the area just interior to where the number 1 points to).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reinforce it, other than to perhaps weld on some six inch or so tabs to better distribute the load?

Ken,

Mine was the carrier and there is no repair. Replace and make certain the new one is reinforced as suggested above. This issue has been increasing as these cars (964/993) get older.

They'd break from time to time on the pre 3.6 cars. Noticed mine one time at the track, too as I walked up to it from behind in the hot pits where I'd parked and wondered why the muffler tip is almost on the ground!

First 3.6 one I saw break was an RSA that had been made into a race car from basically new. So maybe in '95?

Exactly what happened to me! That and during the run right before noticing, I was saying to myself, "man, this thing is shifting a little odd" (HA! HA!)

Hey Tom W., do you still have the pic of the reinforcement I did to your engine carrier? I posted it one time on Rennlist, but can't find it at the moment.

Mark - To reinforce you want to box-in the existing carrier where it meets the tubular end. You then curve this reinforcement piece around the tubular end. OK, I don't even understand what I wrote. Let me look for the pic...

I'm glad you found it Bob. I've posted it a couple times but don't have it on this computer.

That job was done about 4 years ago. The engine has been out 3 times since then (it's out again now) and it's holding up just fine. The damage occured with stock engine mounts (not RS or anything else). I've used RS mounts for the last 4 years and will be going solid this year (along with solid transmission mounts). My car is track only and sees about 30 hours of track time per year.
