993 vs 997
Who thinks the 997 is like getting a modernized 993? Or is having a 993 like having the 997 at less cost? So bottom line, are we really talking about 50-60 grand or is there a distinct differance between the two cars?
maybe its a glass half full question, but I have had my 993 about two years now, and am weighing options between getting a 2002 cab (because it has now become different because I think the 997 looks too much like a 993), or do I wait and try to get a 997 sinceI prefer the 993 body style but the 997 has more HP and the modernized interior and options.
Am I making sense or have I spun myself into a corner?

I think it boiuls down to 1) spend 50k for an updated 993 (aka 997) which gets you more HP and an modern interior or 2) buy a 996 to have something that looks different (still getting HP and modern interior)
I really wish porsche gave the 911 a genuine new look, because of this, I am becoming to appreciate the 996 look. I wa really dissapointed to see that porsche's best minds could only re-visit the 95-98 blueprints.

I would be surprised if the majority here shared your disappointment.
Besides, there is more to the 993 than round headlights. The 997 has several differences, even in the front, and is almost pure 996 in the rear.
Why is motivating you to upgrade in the first place?

they are all beauties, however, i can only have one. Would love to have a 10-car garage with one of each dating back to the 930 turbo cab and 930 slantnose. But unfortunately, i can only have 1. My situation is to keep my 1998 993 cab and save for a 997 cab in 2 years, or buy a '02 996 black now and save for a 997 cab or 996 c4s cab (both become more realistic to me in two years due to price and availability). I have had my current car 2 years and am trying to decide what to do for the next 2 years. Do I mix it up or not? BTW, I can get the '02 cab for about a 10-12k discount to market, I would be buying friends car when it comes off lease

I'll just add this: I would not buy a new car without a compelling reason, if you are happy with your existing car. You sound as if you just want to drop some money on a car for its own sake, or is there a compelling reason?

I hate spending money, don't get me wrong. The compelling reason is do I experience a different 911 every two years or so, at the best price possible of course. I can sell my 911 for about what i paid for it two years ago, and then get into the 996 with a 10-12k cushion to market. It will be like test driving 2 porsches for 4 years for only the time value of money, which has been about 1% a year until recently.
Like I said, I would love to have a 10-car garage with many differnt 911's to take for a spin. Brings another idea that I heard people talk about, a high line auto timeshare club.

I think its just a matter of personal preference. Your either with us, or your against us! Just kidding. For me, I like the 993 much more and find it looks better, sounds better and smells better. I find the lines of the 993 the tops for the 911. I even like the interior better than the "up-dated" or "modern" 996 or 997 version -- buy hey -- to each his own. I also agree that the round headlights are not the only thing its about, but c'mon man, those 996 headlights are pretty darn ugly! Makes the car look like a Boxster on steroids. So, take your pick and enjoy.

Scott,
I agree on the front end, I always wonder if its a boxster or a 996 until I sideways with it and can see the side vents. I think its the variety factor I am angling towards. My wife is constant, but my cars i can change. I love all 911's, first fell in love with the slantnose and 930 turbo.
I really would love to have a different 911 every 1-2 years just to experience them all on a long term basis. Its not like I am eyeballing a ferrari or something non-german. Just love the 911, always did always will.

Now...if only they would bring back the air cooled engine...hey..maybe in the year 2013 they'll come out with a 993 anniversay edition
Which BTW, Porsche is running out of numbers with the 997 ...what is the next gen going to be numbered?

I almost traded in my 993 Targa for a 997S last month, but I didn't do it as I will certainly miss the 993. There are still many chances to get a 997, either new or pre-owned.

Porsche sold more 996s than any other model of 911 by far
As far as RonPCar is concerned....I think you might have better luck with opinions on this subject on the "Water Cooled" forum sections.
