Ron--the 996 and 997 are closely related, nor really the 993 and 996/997....If I were you I would keep your car for the next year and a half to 2 years and if that 997 cab is still breathing down your neck, then get one then. You may be able to get a good deal on a 996 now, but when you go to sell the 996 when you want the 997, it will be worth much less than you paid for it [Almost guaranteed]...however, your 993 may tick down a few notches in value but will probably stay consistent or maybe even appreciate. The market for 993s has stayed up and in many cases 993s that are 6 years older than a 996 Carrera are fetching more money. The looks, allure of the last air cooled 911, and the pure lineage probably contribute to this.

I would say if you are not sick of your car then keep it until another Pcar comes along that you absolutely must have...otherwise you may end up regretting your decision.

To paraphrase Bruce Anderson "buy the newest Porsche that you can afford"
( That is, IF it moves you.)

If you guys are basing your opinions on the 997 because of the round headlights or the new interior, you're missing about 90% of why its such a great evolution of the 911. Drive it and you'll see why its such a great 911, the steering is light years ahead of the 993 and even better than the 996, the throttle response is incredibly sharp and the handling devastatingly precise. So sure it might not become the classic the 993 has become, but it truly is one of the best 911's Porsche has yet produced.

I just took my 993 Cab in for spring servicing and the top recall today, and after yacking with the sales mgr for a while I ended up taking a 997 coupe for a ride.
It was sweet! 325HP vs 282HP is very noticable, even though the 997 only had 18 miles on the Odo. I was glad he told me to take it out alone because full throttle "redline" upshifts through 1 and 2 into 3 was a blast . I imagine after breakin it will be even faster.
Would I buy one?? Ummmmm.... maybe an S.....

It is not only the additional horsepower, but the shorter gear ratios as well that make a difference.

Let's say you just won a new 997 (non 'S') and you can only keep one car (for whatever reason). Would you sell the beloved 993 or the new 997??

i'd sell the 993 and here is why i like the 997 over the 993:
1. warranty
2. safety
both are great cars (well, i assume the 997 is) but the repairs are starting to add up so a warranty would be nice. also, there have been lots of safety features (like side air bags) since our 993 were produced. just my 2 cents

As much as I love my 993.... the 997 is pretty nice, m'friends. I guess IF I were "doing it over again"... I'd get the 997S version. As long as I had the EXTRA 40Gs (or so...).

Pretty nice vehicle... the 997! Nearly as nice looking as the 993... along with all the new tech and along with the BIGGER number o'ponies under the "Go Pedal".

Oh and forgot to mention call me old fashioned, but it would be VERY difficult for me to give-up the 993 series car for anything later.. My .02

I believe this debate falls into the apples vs. oranges category. To each his own but I agree Chris Walrod. It's more of a luxury sports car now. The rawness of the "old" 911s just isn't there anymore. That sound when the door opens and closes, the simple big round gauges, no frills interior, that howl at full throttle...but again, whatever floats your boat. Some Porsche lovers still think 964s are too modernized.
But hey, if you want a 997 go get it! They say the performance is hard to beat.

Honda accords and Toyota Camrys also sell very well. I am not saying that it backfired in terms of sales, but in terms of design, beauty and raw performance. The 997 is trying to recapture the styling of the 993 which is considered by most Porsche's best looking design yet.

For the cost of a nicely equipped 997 Carrera S, I think I would prefer a 2 year old 996 GT3. Unless I win the Lotto, I won't have to worry about that for a while!

As far as value is concerned, some good points on the fact that some 993's are reselling for more than 996's. Also, I agree that the 993 has a truer 911 sound & feel. Maybe that penny stock will hit and I will be able to have both. I was at the dealer this past weekend and asked how much the 997 cab was selling for, he leaned over and quoted me sticker which due to the waiting list, is probably very accurate.

I would love to have 3-5 different 911's at one time, if I was able to, so don;t get me wrong about not loving the pcar. I have wanted one since I was 16.
