SC,

I am not familiar with the V1 unit - is the receiver remote (like behind the bumper grill?) and you are seeking info on the installation of this component?

If this is the case, IMO it is unnecessary and overly complicated. Mounting and hard-wiring either the V1 or Escort 8500 above the rear view mirror will give you great range and a unit that is almost impossible to see from anywhere outside the car.

I take some photos of my install if you like. Don't sweat the 'name calling'. I got pissed at Ray when I first came here and it didn't do me any good. I think if my thoughts are correct on the 'remote' mounting and the nature of your question, perhaps the guys are not understanding what you're asking?

the thing is that it is not a joke; that comment was serious. if someone asks a question that you don't want to answer (for whatever reason) then i think you should simply not answer. answering with some wiseass comment isn't useful to the person who asked. if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing.

Mike
No receiver remote for the V1. The V1 "remote" is a remote display.

Dan - Can you post again how you mounted the main unit? I know you've posted the details before so I apologize. I'm still looking for a way to hide the V1 main unit but still have not come up with anything.

Thanks

David- Dan detailed his installation in the thread that he linked to above (the 2001 thread).

David
Eric beat me to it, but here's an excerpt from the above linked thread re: the windshield mount.

I affixed the V1 windshield suction cup mount to the top of the windshield using 3M clear, double backed tape (available at Home Depot) cut to the size of the cups. I have a spare V1 windshield mount so the ability to remove the mount was not an issue for me. The V1 is, of course, easily removed. My prime goal was to have as secure a mount as possible & I don't trust suction cup mounts alone not to come undone when stressed.

When I first did this install, the tape would not hold to the rubber suction cups when exposed to high heat from the sun. My eventual solution was to instant glue the paper side of 1500 grit sandpaper to the rubber cups and then use the rough side to provide extra grip for the tape. That trick has worked well. Note that you will see the paper side through the clear suction cups so you may wish to use a marker to color it black. I'm sure there may be other solutions to that problem. The tape to glass side needs nothing more than an alcohol cleaning of the glass to stick tight.

The V1 body is offset towards the driver's side so using the antenna center wire or rearview mirror location as a center mark, the mount should be located about ¼" off center to the right (passenger) side so both sun visors will clear the V1, when folded down. Position the mount with the suction cups as high up on the glass as possible (the upper edge will be under the rubber molding).

Try a dry run before peeling off the protective sheet from the tape. Push hard & let it sit overnight before sliding the V1 into the mount.

As I said before, this mount works best w/the concealed display since the V1 is located out of the line of sight & is barely noticeable from inside or outside the car (at least in my black interior).

Dan,
Got ya. I thought they made one that was in the bumper grill. Must be another brand.

you guys kill me. i get jumped all over for asking a follow-up question based on something i read in the V1 manual (proving i read the manual before i asked...) and then david asks you to repost something that you already posted withni this very thread (didn't even need to do a search; only had to read this thread) and you all repost not once, but twice. double standard anyone?

Mike - Although Valentine does not make a remote receiver (see link below) there are shops that market expensive custom modded/rebuilt V1 units in which the front & rear antennas are relocated.

Dan,

I looked at the link. Good explanation as to why to keep the unit up high. Have you been driving your car much? I was thinking of bringing mine home this w/e - we had about 5" of rain over the last three days and the salt is definitely washed off the roads. Can't wait to drive it with the new S02A's and see if I can tell the difference from the S02's. Take care.

You've forgotten that mine is a daily driver so my 993 grin is permanent. Of course, our snowfalls are your dustings! In fact, this winter was so mild I never put my winter tires on the car. 1st DE of the year is this weekend w/temps in the low 60s - perfect.

It's time for you to get the cobwebs out of both your flat sixes.

Can anyone suggest another location for the remote display other than the ashtray (no ashtray with the telephone console) or the top of the steering column (blocks OBC). Once I found out how to get the face of the phone console off (thanks Kelly) for a switched power source, the hardwire install took about 15 minutes. I mounted above the mirror.

i have a turbo (has OBC) and mounted the remote to the right of the tach, between the tach and speedo.
The problem is that the steering column is sloped and the remote will sit too low.
So, my shop took a small black piece of plastic that was cut to match the size of the remote. They velcroed the plastic piece to the steering column and then velcroed the remote to the plastic piece. The extra 1/4-1/2 inch in height makes the remote visible and does not block the OBC. Its amazing how reliable velcro is.

As an aside, i also used double sided velcro to help attach the suction cups of the V1 to the windshield.
