Default Plastic coated wheel socket

I've been looking around for a plastic coated wheel socket for weeks. Some recommend Snap On (AIS171) but it's discontinued now. Griots sells a set of 7 (3 metric, 4 std). My M Coupe uses a 17mm socket. Is the 993 also a 17mm?

Examples of what Bimmer people do

My brother has the 993 so I lurk here now to learn from all of you

Don't bother; the plastic sockets crack. Just use a 6-point steel socket (19mm).

Snap-on has/had a nice steel socket with a soft alloy liner that works pretty well with the 19mm alloy nuts. However, the bmw link above seems to indicate that they are NLA.

I polished up the outside of the socket with 400 grit on a drill so that it would minimize scratching on the deep rear turbo wheel lug nuts. Anyway, I recommend this $30 socket if you can find it.

It matters much less once you switch to steel lug nuts though. slip slip slip

Uh oh, is this an upgrade I haven't heard about yet. Steel Lugnuts? Is this true? I would think the alloy ones would better, ie;lighter...no?

Darin,

I believe the track guys swap out the lugs to steel for strength.

MAC sells thin wall impact sockets with a soft plastic outside liner that protest the wheels. These are around $20 each in 19 or 17 mm.

Default socket

i know exactly what you mean. go to harbor freight and buy socket with aluminum insert very cheap!! then put plastic heat shrink on the outside. why dont they make a socket with protection for lug nuts and your wheels. dont know about manufactures sometimes. i think the 3 piece set is 15 dollars. can order of internet if not in your town. buy 3 set and give the others to a good friend that needs the bigger or smaller size
