Default What's the 411 on Prototech in Florida?

They seem to have a decent reputation but I can't find that much in the archives. How would you feel about a C4S conversion from them with 550 hp and 31k miles (conversion at 20k)?

Don't even ask why I'm inquiring...

Hi,

I have a 98 C4s done by their affiliate in NJ. Runs awesome. Check protomotive.com and look at email responses for complaints. Todd knows his stuff but is in Cal. The Fl outlet is one of his distributors. Sorry but I do not know much about them. NJ has been very helpful since the PO had the work done there. I do know hte newer conversions are even better than mine.

Ernie, don't loose your focus. Get the new firm up and running profitably first. That is why you sold your car, right? Or did you really just have an urge for something new?

Get the turbo and then send it to Prototech!!. They build fast cars, in fact some of the fastest. I would guess that their reputation is as good as Todd Knighton of Protomotive, who does their Motronic tuning and turbosystems, flawless. These are true hardware/engine builders, not bolt-on specialists.

im a big fan of Todd, but have had a some not so great conversations with their NJ shop which suggested things that were opposite to Todd's advice. I have no experience with the Florida shop, but the same situation can exist.
If i lived in CA, i would have the TT in Todd's hands in one second, unfort, im not sure what to do in nyc.

Had my 993 converted to Stage I at about 52k miles by Prototech in Ft Lauderdale 3 or 4 years ago. I have a lot of respect for Todd K. in CA, but I must say their FL affiliate was a bit sloppy, fortunately only on the details. In my case, they delivered my car with the fuel pressure turned way up (to where it smelled or raw fuel and wouldn't pass emissions in TX) and even after sending the car all the way back from Houston to David's shop he could not figure it what the problem was, another shop eventualy did and dialed it back to 53 lbs which is fine with high flow injectors. Also, Ptech delivered car with a cracked oil return tube on one of the turbos, had been epoxied, I thought for the $$$ they charge they could have gone through the trouble of putting in a new tube. I've had to repair it since. I also had to change the rubber hoses connecting the left turbo return tube to the valve covers a couple of times already, thank god any leak will create a lot of visible smoke on heat exchangers or I wouldn't have noticed. Having said that, I've put over 5Ok miles on it since mod and it runs like a charm. I had a Greddy boost controller put in later and forgot to power it one time, ran all the way up to 15 lbs boost on stock (11.3:1 CR I think) and the engine didn't blink. Torque takes a hit on hot humid days but I don't expect I will ever want another car, and I say that even though the honeymoon is definitely over.

I don't know about other locations but the FL location deserved to be boarded up a few years ago. They have a bad reputation for poor service, and poor dealings with other shops.
