Cost for New 993 Clutch (1997 coupe)??
New to this board. I have a 1997 993 coupe that needs a new clutch. I have received quotes all over the place, ranging from 2 quotes at ~$1,300 to 2 quotes at ~$2300. Neither include a Flywheel replacement (that is the only consistent quote i get of an added $1,000).
I am new to Los Angeles and need some guidance here.. Any good reason why these quotes are so far apart? What should this cost? What guidance can you share so that i can ask the right questions?

First off, are you sure you need a new clutch? Search clutch slave cylinder and kinematic as possible issues that may disguise themselves as clutch issues. Second, where do you live? There are several shops around town that us So Cal folks have been to and trust. I'm sure people can chime in if you let us know where you want to go. Third, you should consider changing out the flywheels "while you are in there". The dual mass flywheel that comes OEM is known to fail. Check out www.p-car.com for a write-up on lightweight flywheel/RS clutch conversion. The cost to upgrade to a lwf/RS clutch is usually less than replacing with a full OEM kit. This topic has been threaded to death so search and you should find lots of good info to push you in this direction. Basically weight loss is a good thing. Rotating weight loss is a great thing.
I've received quotes around $3k to do a lwf/RS clutch changeout.

Is your clutch slipping? I've had my car looked over by Callas Rennsport in Torrance and I know others on this board have been happy with Tony Callas' work. I don't think you'll find a bargain there but he seems to know what he's talking about.

Mine is being done as we speak but not sure on final cost. Clutch kit minus flywheel is less than $600 for parts. All depends on labor rate and honesty of your mechanic. Go by "book hours" and you're gonna pay!

For what it's worth, try Circle Imports in Long Beach. Jeff, Service Manager, is a straight up kind of guy and will give you an honest answer and tell you what you really need and don't need. Price seems to be pretty fair. Newport Beach is at least 20% more for the same work.
