I am replacing my battery. '97 993 with the immobilizer system. Will I create any problems by disconnecting the battery or should I run jumpers to the new battery while changing. This immobilizer system has caused me a lot of grief over the years so I want to be careful.
You can disconnect the battery to reset a Computer light, so I would think you'd be fine. My car got the harness recall doen and I am sure they unhooked the battery for that - my immob worked fine afterwards. I think the immob code is burned in the car's electronics because the dealer printed my car's code, they did not just make one up.... That's be a silly design if that were a problem...
BTW: replace it with an Optima if you can ! No acid !
You should have no problems, other than having to re-set your radio code and clock. I believe the ECU goes dumb temporarily after losing power but gets smart again in a few minutes after startup. The immobilizer system normally requires no reset after removal and restoration of power.
What I have done, just playing around, is to plug the Porsche battery maintainer into the cig lighter, then do the battery work. The maintainer has enough ampacity to keep the clock, radio, ECU and immobilizer system happy.
Make sure to kill the interior, trunk and engine lights first - they draw too much current and will trip the maintainer. You know the drill; the interior lights are switched off right at the lens, and the fwd and aft hoods, just flip the catches so the circut thinks the hoods are closed.
Just remember to re-flip the catches before you go slamming the hoods closed. Ouch.
This procedure with the maintainer will keep everything "live" while you change batteries.
Mike is correct the ECU forgets. However once the battery is hooked up you start the car and let it idle of 10 minutes and everything will be fine. You should have no problems with the immobilizer.
