Default Best Porsche/911 Books (993 especially)

Hi,

I'm looking to get hold of some Porsche books covering a breadth of topics from the history of the marque, the evolution of the 911 and some in depth stuff on the 993 and associated variants.

I know I wont find all of this in one book, but was wondering if you guys could make any recommendations??

I'm not looking for in depth black and white roadtest reprints bound together or haynes manuals, just some nice coffee table type stuff with great pictures and in depth accurate info.

If you know of any that fit the bill please let me know.

Thanks
Paul

Excellence was Expected is the best now, but is the whole story of Porsche.
Three volumes a bazillions pages and does cover the whole story in one book. I got it for Christmas and havent stopped reading yet. abotu $240 great investment. Adrian Streather is coming out with a book soley on the 993 soon and we are all
drooling waiting for it. HE is a noted author and wrote the keynote book on the 964 that all the
964 people keep on the nightstand at all times right next to their Bibles (Disclaimer Bible is meant to be and
important book one keeps on their nitestand)

"Original Porsche 911" by Peter Morgan, and "Porsche 911 Buyer's Guide" by Randy Leffingwell. Both published by MBI Publishing Company.

I will second the Excellence Was Expected recommendation.

Amazing collection, but you will need a big and sturdy coffee table.

Paul Frere's book is outstanding, much cheaper and more concentrated than others. Very technical and readable.

Check out the "Gold Portofolio", it's a compliation of magazine articles on the 993. Very useful in terms of opinions and evaluations.

To get maximum enjoyment out of your car, you might consider Going Faster by Carl Lopez/Skip Barber Race School.

Even if you never track your car, you'll learn a lot about driving.

Also, congrats on your first post. You'll find a wealth of knowledge, and entertainment here. You'll find membership to be a real bargain.

I have to disagree with "mike in OC" . the Porsche 911 buyers guide is not a very good book. Not much info and an annoying tendency to reprint pages of the same info. A bad read in my opinion....

I was disappointed by Peter Morgans buyers guide on the 993. I have another book of his called Original Porsche 924/944/968 which is pretty good, so the one covering the 911 may also be good, but I have not seen it yet.

Porsche 911 by Patrick Paternie for an overview of each model; also his Porsche (911) Redbook is a useful compilation of statistics about each year 911 from 1965 thru 1999.

I am partial to Randy Leffingwell's Porsche 911 Buyer's Guide because my former '85 turbolook is on the cover.
