Folks,

On the 23rd December I decided to get my self a Christmas Present, I bought a Porsche 993 (Polar Silver), Manual gear box, 1995 Model, (272 BHP) Grey leather seats, 69,800 miles, full official Porsche service history, Mint Condition, Not a single stone chip, garaged all its life, 18inch wheels for £25,500 pounds.

My first question, is this a good price and what would you think the estimated value of this car will be in 1/2 years time?

I did find out that the following info about the performance :-
0-30 = 1.8
0-60 = 5.2
Top Speed 168 mph.
* Although the Porsche owners manual states 1 0-62 mph time of 5.6 seconds, I read a couple of road tests and each one gave a 60 time of 5.1 or 5.2 seconds. Why do you think the 0-62 time given by Porsche is so different to the road tests?

Over the weekend my father recommended me taking the air filter out of the car to get another 5 bhp, I decided to give it a go and see if it made any difference, Well I drove the car and the engine sound and extra power was good, it really has made the driving experience even better. Although in hot climate's where there is lots of dust or sand the air filter is important keeping crap out, but here in the UK where the air is clean, I don't think its too much of a problem. As for extra power I do know that air being restricted into the engine will cause less power.

Michael,

FYI, I would keep your air filter on. You're asking for trouble by running with it off. Do a search under drilled airbox/air box if you want better breathing with the filter on.

BTW, the light blue on white text color is a bit hard to read. Readers may not take the time to strain through your posts.

Are you serious? I wouldn't dream of removing the air filter in any car no matter where I lived. Absolutely not. Please put it back in, for the sake of your engine!

Besides, most people say that even going to a lower-resistance filter like K&N gives you zero gain in a 993. Further, going to a lower-resistance exhaust is similarly futile for the most part for us.

 

Boys clam down, my father had a number of etype jags and high performance porsche's over the years and always removed his air filters, he never had any problems. But of course, fathers can talk a lot of crap I ordered last week a K & N air filter and plan to put that on over the weekend.

I wouldnt ever run without a filter on any car, much less a 911. I notice leaves and other larger items in my airbox from time to time.

Pistons and cylinders are far too expensive for not running a filter. In fact, I feel too naked and unprotected to use K&N filters. FWIW

 

michael - what are you trying to do running without an air filter - 'blow the bloody doors off...?'

Ok i have in fact checked my air filter box and nowtice that I have the P93 Motorsound Airfilter Cover fitted to my car already. ;¬)

I am going to fit the K&N air filter, I really don't see any problem with that.

I have the K&N filter replacement like you are getting. Unless your current filter is in need of replacing, why bother? It does nothing for performance, AFAIK.

 

Whats the US dollar conversion of 25,500 pounds?. Sounds like a descent price.

michael as daniel says - there is very little if any performance to be gained
they make a bit more noise but wont cause you any problems.
strange to see another italian car man coming across to the 993 - my previous motor was a lancia delta evolution

I am not sure what your objectives you want to get from your 993. If you want more power, then just supercharge it (ie: TPC kit). You will get a lot of bang. Search the forum for lots threads on this. I for one am very pleased with the results!

 

Dude, that's almost $48,000. Most definitely NOT a good price in the U.S., but probably not bad for UK. Sometimes we forget how nice we have it.

 

IIRC Boris posted some dyno numbers a few months ago and saw no difference with the K&N filer vs stock. It may have even been a couple hp less.

Congrats on your purchase & welcome to Rennlist.
While the opinions/posts of a single or even a few Rennlisters may not be persuasive, a consensus here represents a wealth of Porsche wisdom & experience. If you'll search the archives, you'll find that the consensus re your question here is:
1. Airbox mods, at best, yield virtually no performance benefit, but may improve sound.
2. Same for exhaust mods.
3. "Low restriction" filters like K&N are not advised. They do not filter as well as the oem paper filter. Many here, including me, have personal experience with that issue. In addition to what Tom said, I recall a poster who shared comparative dyno results w/a K&N cone filter & oem paper. The results were a reduction in power apparently due to the hot intake air in the engine compartment.
4. There's no cheap added power to be had from a 993.

 

Get a performance chip for your ECU from Steve at Rennsport (www.rennsport.com). '95 is the cheapest of the 993s to do this for. You'll notice a much bigger difference than messing around with the air filter. I'd still like to get hold of the person who started that "urban myth."
