I am in the process of purchasing a 95 993 with 103k miles. What do I need to check in terms of maintenance?

I would certainly make sure it has records as well as getting a thorough PPI done.

Is 993Chaz said all service records and a PPI should do it. 993 engines are built to last 400.000 miles so .... Check out the clutch + suspension. If all the services are done you should be ok.

I have just passed 100.000 miles on my car a few weeks ago and it runs like a dream.

Ask the owner how often they add oil. This will give indication to valve guide wear.

Where is the car? Mine just turned 104k miles, and most of my issues had to do with rust and corrosion. Hope your target car was not exposed to such conditions.

While nice to have and great indicators, I don't worry too much about former maintenance records...but a good PPI is tops on the list.

There's a couple of schools of thougth on higher mileage cars... if they have been taken care of and driven, you may end up with a car with less problems than a lower mileage garage queen. Porsche love to be driven...and unfortunately, sometimes they are not.

With all due respect, I disagree. If you don't have the maintenance records, either form the PO or the dealer, how do you know it's been taken care of? With 103,000 miles, I would want some assurance that the service intervals have not been ignored.

The PPI is crucial, but a PPI is unlikely to reveal a poor maintenance history.

Mark,
I agree that proper maintenance is very important. But how will you learn about service work done on the car if PO did all the regular maintenance himself?
Very simple, you change oil, flush brake fluid, replace brake pads - do you write or type it down somewhere and add printed page to the service booklet?

I actually do I keep a detailed log and all records / receipts of work I've had done, or have completed myself. I guess the only thing they could question is your level of competence; yet, from some of the dealership stories, one could question theirs.
I know when I do a project on my car my expectations meet or exceed a pro's, I do a lot of attention to detail stuff I know a shop doesn't have the time for. And if I can't do the job, I take it to someone very reputable.

Hi Alexander,

Like Jeff, when I do my own work, I keep all receipts and then log the mileage either on the receipt or on a separate sheet. I know this doesn't help if I were to sell the car or trade the car in, whereby the dealer/wholesaler/new owner perhaps would not have the receipts remain with the car nor does it help since my work isn't recorded at a dealer.

Valve guide wear is something you need to take a look at. Check for oil usage.

PPIs can range from shining a flashlight around under the car, to a very thorough inspection of all the car's systems. My experience with Porsche dealer PPIs is that they are of the flashlight/records check category. Here is the link to a great article and checklist by our late friend Paul Lighthill.
