Porsche Naming
I'm not sure where this is covered, but does anyone know how Porsche came up with the 993, 996, 964, names?
Was 993 because the car was first shown in 1993 as a '94 model?...if so, don't know if this still holds for 996 & obviously new 997.
Thanks

I think I read somewhere that the 911 was initially to be named 901 but Peugeot owned the rights so, as they say, the rest is history...
On another OT subject, the Lotus Elise was supposed to be named Elsie (Chairman Artoli's granddaughter, or was it daughter?) but the memo got mistyped and the Elise was born. Thank god. IMHO naming a car after a cow is worse than naming it after a chili pepper, or a North African nomadic tribe, for that matter.

JimBob - thanks for a good laugh and keeping this board funny.
Shant - I think most people, at least here in the US of A, pronounce 911, "nine eleven", and 964, "nine sixty-four". But I can't recall a single time when somone has called a 993, "nine ninety-three" or a 996, "nine ninety-six". It always seems to be spelled out as individual numbers.
The British often spell out the numbers, too, calling 911, "nine one one" or 964, "nine six four".
Maybe our pals across the pond can corroborate or deny this.
FWIW, in the movie H.E.A.T., Tone Loc, in an attempt to quash other, rival chop shops, tells cop Al Pacino that he "might find two turbos and a nine one one slope" at his competition.
So, okay, the British and rappers, then.
