Default i'm experiencing steering wheel wiggle under heavy braking, any thoughts on a cause?

On my 97'TT, under heavy braking, the steering wheel wiggles in my hand. I had thought for a time that this was the car following ruts in the road, but have recently experienced it on newly paved roads.

The intensity of wiggle increases with speed of deceleration.

Would this be a symptom of a failing (or failed) OE suspension, of a misalignment, of improper tire pressure or of something else?
My thoughts are the former and I'm considering replacing with HD's.

The car is lowered to ROW, has fresh tires and under 20k miles.

Thanks for any opinions.

I have a wiggle at a very specific speed range. Between 45 and 55 mph. I wouldn't characterize it as a heavy brakeing issue. I think it's more pronounced under moderate to light brakeing. I suspect a balance issue.

Do you experience the wiggle at all speeds, or a band? I would think a warped rotor would cause problems at all speeds.

warped rotors, maybe, but you'd also feel an oscilation in the brake pedal. right? i had a little too much toe out on my old bmw 330ci and that caused a vibration. have your brakes inspected and alignment checked.

Bradford, those wheels and the color looks great on red!!! Very nice.

I would check for worn out suspension bushings and tightness of suspension bolts in the front or for "warped" rotors.

Most likely, worn out rotors which need to be replaced. They are consumeables. How many miles on the car (the rotors)?

Bad wheel alignment and warn rear lower A arms can cause this also.

Hunter GSP9700. Find a shop with one of these to check and make sure the wheels are balanced properly.

car has just under 17k miles. i had the 30k service done at 15k. wouldent warped rotors have been noticed?
The car was road tested at the time. All the work was done by Powertech in northern NJ.

no oscilation. the brake pedal stays firm from appliation to stop. i experience it most often coming to a stop light when traveling at about 50--you know....when you think your going to make that yellow and decide its too late and have to stop....

Mine did exactly this also ... it was incorrect toe adjustment in the rear.

First check brake pad, then rotor. After I replaced my pad, the wiggle went away.

Most often this is the result of uneven deposits of pad material on the rotor. You get inconsistent grip around the rotor, hence the pulsing. Sometimes re-bedding the pads will fix this or a light resurface of the rotors. They can also be cleaned by running an agressive pad (Hawk Blue) for a short time to cleand the rotors of the old material.

I had the Shimmy between 40 and 50 MPH. New rotors and pads did the trick for me.

FWIW, I also needed new tires, so those were put on and rebalanced and the shimmy was still there.

Agree totataly with the above if your shimmy is under braking, otherwise worn front toe links?
