Post min spec CCA for 993 battery?

Does anybody know what the min CCA recommended for a 993 battery?

Thanks!

Jeff,

If I remember correctly, the CCA for the stock Porsche battery was about 700-750. The Optima Orange Top in my car has 830 CCA at 0 degrees F and 1050 CCA at 32 degrees F.

From the following website, http://209.132.206.136/content/ccr/ccr20001001sb.xml :

"AC-Delco devised a more scientific approach for determining CC requirements. Their rule of thumb is to multiply engine displacement in cubic inches by 1.5. So, a Chevy 350 should have a minimum 525 CCA battery; realistically more in cold country."

Unfortunately, I don't know the cubic inch displacment of our 3.6 L engine!

They also state, "In general, buy the biggest Group Size that will physically fit in the mounting location and the battery model that has the most Cold Cranking Amps and Reserve Capacity you can afford. This reduces the depth of discharge (especially in SLI batteries), extending battery life."

That's one of the reasons I went with the Orange Top, despite its inherent installation hassles due to the inboard terminals.

Sorry for the indirect answer to your question, but hopefully this will help a little!

Thanks Anir..

I was just thinking of what to do _IF_ I need to replace my battery again. I think that I would go with the Exide Orbital, just so the installtion was a bit cleaner. It's a bit lower on the CCA's though. Optima makes a Red Top (800R) which has the termials on the outside also. I'm not entirely sure if the 800R is still being made, however.

Here are the CCA numbers:

Orange Top: 750 @ 0F, 980 @ 32F
Orbital: 700 @ 0F, 890 @ 32F
Red Top(800R) 650 @ 0F, 870 @ 32F

If I can find an Exide Orbital locally, I'll be going with it. If not, I'll see about hunting down the 800R.

I'm guessing that this is the 800R:
Optima 75/35

Question: Would your carpet lie flat if you didn't have the battery disconnect adapter? Or is the battery just too tall?</STRONG>

Yep, that is the 800R. I don't think that the height would be an issue. The optima orange ( 7.8 " ) would allow the carpet to lie flat if the adaptors were not used.

The Red Top is 7.6" high, so it's a bit lower and should will work fine becuase you don't have to add all the funky adapters.

Dan,

I'm not sure if this was your source, but Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" has a useful Appendix 4 listing numerous metric to U.S. conversions on page 264, including 1 liter = 61.032 cubic inches, which yields exactly 219.7 as you stated.

Jeff, this would seem to suggest 330 as the minimum CCA, if the AC Delco guidelines apply. Seems pretty low, aye?

I just installed the Red Top Optima, however, it doesn't look exactly like the one posted. It sits fine and the carpet does lay flat without a battery disconnect. I believe it is 850cca and 1000 ca. Optima is being distributed by Interstate Batteries and it has an Interstate sticker above the Optima markings. Interstate is local, so I didn't have a problem locating the red, blue, yellow or orange tops.

Good luck,
Sam

Jeff,

No problem. I'll snap a picture and either post it or e-mail it to you directly. Also, if you can locate an Interstate distributor, they should be able to order any of the Optima batteries.

Kim,

You are correct. It is simply the green plastic dial of the battery disconnect switch that sits too tall.

Jeff,

I've been checking into possible leads to your original question. The original battery in my car was a Moll Kamina 57069. Specs for this battery can be found at www.moll-batterien.de/downloads/lieferprogramm.pdf , but unfortunately, I cannot read German!

You might also contact Moll Kamina directly and see if they can answer the question more definitively.

Hope this helps.

Anir,

Just noticed that you added another stablemate to your collection. Congratulations! Did you get the M3 with the SMG package? What made you decide on the BMW?

hallo
here in germany we measure the Battery by
Voltage and Ampere/Hours. Your Battery will have a number like 12/63.
This means 12Volt /63 Ampere .It is very uncommon here to say cca ,like you do in the US.
Happy new year.

Sam,

Actually, the M3 will arrive in about two weeks. It's titanium silver / imola red - pretty similar to the arctic silver / chestnut "brown" on my 993 (How's that for originality? ). It will actually be the first SMG-II equipped M3 in our area, since this option just became available in November.

I honestly can't think of a better NEW sports coupe with seating for 4-5 at $55K. It was an easy decision, since my wife "needed" a new, sportier car to replace her 1994 Infiniti G20. We're not the minivan/SUV/station wagon types, but really could use a bit more rear seat room than offered by the 993!
