Default Door is making a popping noise

Must have missed this when I purchased car recently, the bracket
that the door limiting strap attaches to is loose. I imagine it is
spot welded on the backside where there is no access and the welds
have failed. I searched the forums, but my terminology is most likely
incorrect. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Funny (not really) the exact same thing happened to me several weeks back when I bought my car. I didn't notice anything at first. Guess I was all stoked on everything else about the car. Good news was my mechanic repaired it with a welder for the cost of 2 hours labor and he even repainted the area. Was a really clean job. If yours needs it just be careful who does it for you. I'm sure there's somebody on this forum who lives in your area and can make a reccomendation on where to take your car. I've heard some shops really do a sloppy repair job. Good luck!
p.s. Fixing this cost WAAAAAY less than what I'm used to spending on my 928.....I never know whats next with that one!

Thumbs up

Thanks Ron, I know what I need to do now.
If only I would have read these threads prior to purchasing.
But on a positive note, I love the car, the fix is easy(I'll take
the easy $$$$ route)and being a member of this forum is
one of life's more pleasurable experiences.

Steve,
The exact same thing happened to me. I took it to any ol' shop down the street and they welded and painted it for $100. I was armed with the following pic, which helped explain what I wanted them to do. My advice: do it now instead of procrastinating like I did!

I too had it fixed. Becareful of the hacks out there. I have seen some bad weld jobs on 993's door straps. Good luck.

Chuck,
Did they remove your door when they fixed it? I was surprised when they told me they had to remove the door.

I am not sure. However, like you, I can see no reason they would have to.

yes, if the job is done right. The door would have to be removed to weld the base of the door check on to the A-pillar. The sound is coming from the base of the door check - the base has torn the weld and A-pillar apart. This is part of the repair you cannot see unless you take the door off.

The picture of the silver door is from my car...my body shop welded both door straps and then shaped the weld and repainted etc. I did it as part of some other touch-ups so I am not sure of the total cost. Still holding after 2 years. The only thing I don't like about this approach is the backside of the weld is not treated for rustproofing. No signs of any problems and it gets driven 10 months of the year, rain or shine.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike J....That is one of the cleanest jobs I have seen. I was happy with mine after see some of the poorer weld jobs out there.
