Default Can someone please offer some feedback on Bilsteins modification (?)

Getting my M030 w/Bilsteins very soon... got this email below today from Devek (thanks Austin!) and not sure completely I understand the modification part... can someone please offer an opinion (typical, good, bad, etc) ?

"The invoice copy should be attached to this email for your review. It includes all new hardware and bump stops. The shipping options are included with pricing. We are receiving another shipment of Bilsteins on Monday ( 2 days later than expected) and will then modify and ship them right away. The modification includes reinforcing the clamp function of the shock attachment bracket to improve it's durability. "

thanks

I have PSS9s, so it might attach differently than HDs. I can't think of a shock attachment bracket that they refer to, unless it's the sway bar bracket, maybe? Even then, I can't think of what they might do to that. I'd be very interested in what it means.

With due respect, I've always found the best way to avoid misunderstandings with vendors is to resolve all questions & confirm order details directly with the vendor before shipment. That's my "opinion." BTW, my opinion based on my speculation about the vendor's email to you won't help you avoid those pesky restocking fees.

Devek -- you out there? :-)

Returned message to Austin, will be interested to hear... my immediate reaction is to want the standard US Bilstein HDs without any modification, but I certainly want to understand more about this...

thanks!

boy theres always one in a crowd... let the PP thing die already...Wayne and I have...

i left a return email for Devek..this is sort of a technical question...i thought there would be interest in the topic...and Viper Bob, et. al. frequent here often... (if i would have not mentioned an email or order for an M030, would you have then helped answer my question?)

Maybe the mods mean they're cutting the brake line bracket, so you slide the line in there without having to open it and then, of course, bleed it. I did that on my Bilstein HD's. Also, some minor new hardware is nice to have, since you're likely to break some of those plastic plugs and clips on removal.

for anyone interested that may be getting the Devek M030/Bilsteins, here is a great response with the answer from Austin...

"The Bilstein HD rear shocks each have 1 aluminum bracket that fits to the
threaded portion of the shock body. The bracket is a threaded collar with an
extension on one side. The function of the bracket is to support the spring
perch and offer an attachment point for the sway bar link (hence the
extension). The bracket design as equipped from Bilstein can work it's way
loose through the stresses of driving. We spear the extension near the
collar with a bolt and locking nut to enable better clamping action on the
shock body. The added steel hardware also better supports the aluminum. To
sum it up, we make the brackets easier to adjust and last longer by reducing
some of the flex stress on the shock body threads and reinforcing the
bracket. We do this procedure on every Bilstein kit we sell and install,
including PSS9's. If you would prefer a kit without the addition we can
provide that."

---- sounds good to me, excited to get this setup onto my car!

I think you just made my point. Now wasn't that better than a bunch of us guessing? FWIW, IMO Devek's mod is a smart move. I'm sure you'll love the new suspension.

I'm expecting delivery of Bilstein HDs (likely tomorrow) from Carnewal. I assume that this will not be done on the Carnewal Bilsteins. Does Rennlist wisdom say I NEED this kind of modification, or is it just nice to have? I will be doing autocross and some DE days.

Paul
FWIW, I installed Gert's HDs w/o any installation mods & after 2.5 years of daily driving & maybe a dozen track days everything is still rock solid. I also remain pleased w/my suspension choice (ROW M030 & HD).

see Dan, I bet its helpful that a nice, detailed explanation of the modification is now on the board for members to see... lots of prospective M030 /Bilstein buyers out there!

agree with you it looks like a good idea, and I am going that direction...
