My drivers window won't go down. It's the first time it's been a problem. I'm guessing it's the switch or maybe a fuse. The passenger window works fine. Anybody know what it might be? There's no sound when I push the switch. Is it difficult to fix?
To take Greg's advice one step further, you can slide the right side (pass.) switch out of the door and swap it with with the non working drivers switch. The switches just pull out of the door. I had the same issue a few months ago and isolated the problem to a bad switch.
Picking this up again, I had the same problem surface this weekend. Sticky passenger window switch on drivers side broke off, revealing broken post for that nib/spring assembly.
But now BOTH passenger window switches aren't working! The pass side switch is now not getting result, also, tho the switch works fine. No motor sound - just...nothing. Of course, window is in down position (and as a typhoon blows into town).
Swapped switches around and still no resolution. Drivers side still working so fuse is fine.
All I can say is that I replaced three switches and one motor in 18 months on my 993 before I sold it. My theory on the motor failure was that the switch was stuck in the "down" position and I burnt up the motor. I noticed when I got home the switch was stuck and the motor never worked again. One switch completly fell apart in my hand.

Hi Pete,
Interesting twist with the passenger window switches--both the driver and passenger's side switches must be intact/installed for the window to work. If one is removed or broken, the other will not work.
On the other hand, you said you swapped switches around. I would think that swapping the good driver's-side switch into the driver's-side passenger switch position (giving you 2 good switches) would make the window work. Unless your passenger-side passenger window switch is also broken .... or the motor is bad, or the window is seized.
On a 964, there's also a manual crank for operating the window. The crank is located in the tool kit, and you have to remove the tweeter to access the operating port. If the 993 has this option, it should be described in the owner's manual.
Thanks, everyone. You got me, Randall: I never had both pass. switches installed at once! <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />
As my wife said on the way back from the Delaware shore in the blinding rain (cardboard window on her side...): "So you're just going to pose this question on that Porsche list and you'll get an answer?"

Don't feel too bad, Peter. It really is counterintuitive that both switches must be installed/intact to operate the window. I just happened to stumble across this phenomenon more or less by accident.

[eyes never leaving the road] "That's right."

LOL!
Does anyone know if a 993 has a manual crank, like the 964 does?
I just had the same problem and this post lead me to a quick diagnostic. Interestingly I had an extra switch from the PO but it didn't fit in my car - the part number in my 993 starts with 964. Must have been using parts from the older version in the first year of the 993.
I know I have revived an old post but I thought I'd share my solution for the window switches - instead of buying the switches for $70 CDN from my repair shop, or buying them for $50 US + Shipping online, I bought non-OEM switches from fcpgroton.com for $9.60 each.
We'll see how long they last but for the cost it seemed like it was worth a try.
