Rennsport Systems Chip Review
Greetings All,
I am posting this review of my most recent upgrade. I bought a 97 ECU with Steve W.'s (Rennsport Systems) chip upgrade from a fellow Rennlister. All I can say is WOW. I just got back from a 2 day event at Road America, what a upgrade! I last ran at RA over Memorial Day weekend. My best time was 2.50 around the 4 mile course. I knocked 4 seconds off my time, running consistent lap times of 2.46 when the track was dry. (on very,very used Hoosiers) The chip has really improved the performance of the car. The power is much smoother across the whole powerband. Many people have told me that chips dont work, or the HP gain is not enough to notice. These people have never tried a chip from Steve! Lap times dont lie! Timing was done with a intercomp timer. I have been running with the same group of guys for the past couple of years, one has a 74 lightweight euro version with the real 2.7 engine, on long straights we ran very even. Over the past 2 days there was nothing he could do to keep up, same with a 97 993 S, I was pulling away by over 10 car lengths on the long straights. There was also a 993 TT in our run group, now I'm not going to say I dusted him/her but I kept up... I dont know the driver skill level, but on a long course like Road America, the Turbos have a huge advantage. The Vettes in group 2 had no chance, in turns,straights, anywhere. Anyway, I digress, The Rennsport System chip works! around town the car feels very smooth with power coming on early and strong, on the track the power is amazing. If you can afford it, buy yourself one, you wont be sorry!

If you have a 96 you will need to find a 97 and only a 97 ECU for this upgrade. The 96 ECU cannot be flashed and I was told the 98 ECU has a feature that sets off the check engine light on a 96 car.

Eric, why did you have to post that? My resistance, like your lap time, is going down fast.
I would really like to upgrade my '96 by 'chipping' it but the added expense of buying a new ECU is putting me off; for now.
Anyone know of a '97 ECU at a good price?
Steve, do you foresee being able to, at some point in the future, reprogram a '96 ECU?

I am currently working on doing the 96's but this has been a work-in-progress and has taken more time than I anticipated.
Its decidedly NOT easy and when I do this, you'll be able to switch between multiple chips and this feature will be available for the '95 and '96-'98 993's.
LOL,... I'm not making any foolish predictions or guesses when we will ready to offer that. Its in the R&D stage now.
For the present, you'll need a new ECU as now almost all of the crop of 993 engines sold for conversions come with the harness & DME and now there are few, if any separate used ECU's available.

Face the music Kim, this mod is just what you need.
The only bad thing is that you can only buy this mod once for your car. ...but then again I guess you could buy the multiple chips multiple times.

Eric, I have a '98 car. Steve remapped my ECU back in December, and never once saw the CE light. Just a note to those others that may be on the fence on doing this upgrade. It's well worth it, just as Eric mentioned above.

Finn, drop the "visual" mods and get with the real ones that will truly allow you to enjoy your car. Start with the suspension and then Steve's chip work... You won't be disappointed.

Only possible problem is when you put a 98 ECU into a 96 car. The 98 ECU has a sensor for something that is not on the 96. My point was to alert anyone with a 96 not to look for a 98 ECU. The Check engine light will come on with the above set up. Sorry for any confusion

I can ditto Eric's comments only for a '95 running the "California 91 Octane" program from Steve (Rennsport Systems).
Prior to my 993, I have chipped most all of the Motronic based cars that I have had. The Rennsport program is the best to date. What really impressed me was the thoroughness and commitment Steve puts behind his programs. I have the lightweight flywheel and had worries about chipping and the return to idle performance. Car now idles better than wiht the stock chip.
As far as performance. Engine revs much "free-er". Torgue throughout is improved but very noticable in the higher RPM's. Running Chevron "91", I have not experienced any pinging or other signs of a too agressive program.
I would have comment the all of Steve's posts about his chips/programs have been brought to life in the product. Ya 'cant say that about too many vendors ! ( Of course, Robin is in here as well with the RSR's !!!)
