Called my dealer this morning.

He asked if I had gotten "the letter," to which I said "No, I just called Porsche direct."

He then confirmed w/ me to see if Porsche said my car WAS effected. I told him that customer commitment did in fact tell me that it was...

So he said "Okay, lets set an appointment & get this done..."

I asked how long he would need the car...

He replies with: "Three days."

I told him that it was only an 8 hour job. He went on to say: "Well, I need a tech to check the loom part # on your car, then I need to order parts, then I need to have the swap performed... Three days for sure..."

So I said "Well, I will bring the car in for you to check the part numbers" (I had told him that I HAVE the part numbers from my loom, but he said a tech needed to personally read them), "but then I am taking the car home until you get all the parts in & THEN schedule a time for me to get it back to you.

For that we both agreed.

After that... I asked the ultimate question...

"Will I be the 1st loom replaced in our area???"

He said "Yes, I have a list here of 4 cars (he did not recall if I was one of them) in our area that I have to call on... You would be the first one to have the service performed."

GULP! That's what I was afraid of.

I go in next Wednesday to complete the 1st step.

Guys, there are two rennlisters who have successfully replaced their harnesses on their own in ther garage without a lift or dropping the motor. My mechanic was able to do it without dropping the motor. I think the dealer probably will drop the motor to make it easier on them. To be honest, dropping the motor in our cars is pretty easy for a dealer who has done it, probably takes 1-1.5 hours to remove it and less to put it on. I would imagine this is how the dealer is going to replace the harness.

I am waiting on a fax from a Rennlister of the actual TSB that should state exactly what and how it's to be done. I will post it when I get it.

I really would not worry about being the first person in an area to do it as it just wont be that hard for a dealer with techs who are around these cars all day long.

Yes, it will be a good idea to get other motor work like seals and senders and stuff done at the same time.

Dave, I don't know and won't know much more until I see the wording of the letter and the TSB. I am waiting on both. I would imagine that if the letter says you can get re-imbursed for the part even if you did it yourself, then Hank would go for it. I have not asked him though. Let us know what you hear from your letter. I have heard that the refund should be no more than 10 days total.

I thought I'd "wait and see" if I would receive the letter. Well, today, I lost patience and called my dealer. He "...looked it up on the Porsche computer..." and my VIN(last 4 digits=1808), are covered by the recall. I asked how much time do I have to get this checked, he said "indefinitely". So, an appointment will have to be scheduled.

Mine was done 10/19/01 by porsche north orlando, free of charge. The total labor hours were 4.6, and I dropped it off wednesday afternoon, and picked it up friday morning.

My letter came today for my 96 C2. The date on the cover letter is 11/1. The card that comes in the packet says that if you replaced the harness before, it should still be inspected. They also state that the work should take 6 to 8 hours to complete.

Guess once my car is finally back on the road, it can go back into the shop for the harness.

I got my notice from PCNA in the mail today and took my car over to the dealer...they said they needed to check the number on the harness and then told me mine was covered by the recall. They have to order the harness and I have a scheduled replacement on the 19th. My VIN# last four is 1741. Thanks to all who lobbied for this action to take place. BTW I have not had a problem with my car(knock on wood) but have had this dread in the back of my mind

HI Randy,
Small world. Same color car, same wire harness recall letter from Porsche :-)

I received mine today as well. I had mine check a few months ago ($220) by Squires and they said it looked fine.

The main question here is do I go in anyways to Porsche?? If it looks fine will they put a new one on or simply give it an OK?

Guys, this has been said many times, but I'll say it again as there may be new rennlist people trying to find more info on the wiring harness.

[quote]THERE IS NO WAY THAT A CURSORY CHECK WILL TURN UP ANY HARD EVIDENCE OF A HARNESS PROBLEM. THE RAMIFICATIONS OF TRUSTING A CURSORY CHECK ON THE HARNESS COULD RESULT IN YOUR CAR BURNING TO THE GROUND WITH OUR WITHOUT YOU IN IT.

Please take this recall as very serious from PCNA - some of us have been pushing for years to have it take place. You can read between the lines of the recall notice "rough engine runing, stalling, starter malfunction, check engine light" and others as really meaning that there is a good chance of fire. If it weren't for the risk of fire, this recall would not be taking place.

Please go to the dealer to get your harness checked, and if your VIN is between the numbers listed elsewhere, then let them replace it.

E. J.

ps - the all caps were for attention, not yelling.

My car is part of the recall. What does the dealer do when they replace the harness?

The reason I ask is because my car (a '96 model) is running really well now and I have developed the suspension to where I really like it. If they take the engine out I'm concerned they won't align it where I had it and I'll be back to square one.

PS: I don't think it's a coincidence that more than a few of us are worried about the dealer screwing up our perfectly running machines.

Tone...I would definately take it in and have it replaced. I have had no problem with mine but I do believe that you have to go in deeper than a look into the engine compartment( I believe the alternator has to be exposed and the leads checked). Took mine to Barrier in Bellevue and had Tim look at it(he is the one to deal with there...very knowledgable). We should get together sometime and cruise somewhere.
