Default HID DIY

Did anyone ever write up a do it yourself on the HID installation? I am in need for a friend of mine.

Thanks,
Pete

I did it a couple weeks ago. Took a few hours (as all first times do) and now could be done in an hour or so. What a tremendous improvement.

I also just did it a few weeks ago. I purchased a kit from an ebay seller for $270 shipped. I mounted the ballasts inside the trunk just like oem. Heres a link to the kit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=36476

BrianB,

Did you have to make any mods to this kit? $269 sounds like a great deal. Is this the same as the katz kit everyone speaks of?

Thanks!

I got mine from HID-Online.com, I think it was $500. It's a UK company and you need to search for Porsche under RoW and not North America. The kit came in 2 days and the install was hassle free. It does require drilling a couple holes.

The kit I installed required no mods other than a 1" hole drilled onto the back of the headlight to run the cables. This kit uses a ballast and igniter combo. The Catz kit (wich is no longer available) used a separate ballast and igniter. The sellers e-mail is TheLegend321@aol.com if you interested just shoot him an I e-mail. One thing I liked about the kit was it is completly water proof and also priced well. The bulbs are GE wich is OEM for volkswagen I beleive. Just make sure you 4300k. Good luck.

I have no affilation with the seller other than being a satisfied customer.

Ask a question, find the answer yourself, and still get a ton of input. Gotta love it!

What the... $269 for HID's? Are they HID Xenon lights? Excuse me for what may seem like an ignorant question, but how does this differ from the $1000+ OEM Porsche Litronic light set up? If it's the same thing or VERY similar, I'm there, if they're still selling them for this price. Are they?

My stock lights suck so this is VERY appealing to me. I've gotten spoiled by my "new" BMW with the Xenon lights. What's the catch here? I'm not a DIY'er so I'd have to pay my mechanic to do it.

Same exact thing. Actually IMHO I think this is better technology. The first automotive HID systems in 95-96 all used seperate igniters and ballasts. Now every new car with HID lights has the ballast and igniter in one module. I have an 01 X5 with OEM HID and a Mini Copper S with OEM HID and I put them side by with my 993 converted HID lights and they are exaclty the same. I mean dead on. I cannot stress how excellent the results were from this mod. The stock halogens are so bad. For me I felt is was a safety issue. There has been way to many times I couldn't see an off ramp turn or a road sign ect.

I drive over a small mountain every day to get to work and live in a relatively rural environment (for being 20 miles from a large metro area) and deer are a significant hazard. The original lights suck. I finally got fed up and switched to the HIDs (legal or not). I went for a test drive and was able to see a deer well in advance of what the stock would have allowed. Brights (even the silverstars) now make only a slight imp[rovement in visability. I did think it was very nice of he deer to make the appearance on the test drive though ... In the end, i would much rather have to explain why I have good lights that may or may not be legal than to explain that I've just done $10k in damage because I smashed a deer and destroyed my bumper cover, hood and windshield (and maybe more).

As I understand it, the "cheap" HIDs lack a self leveling feature and as such may be illegal. Well, I don't think all laws actually make much sense and in our case it's not like dumping a ton of stuff in the trunk is going to make the lights shine into anyones eyes because they are now no longer level.
