The Howl....
I had the opportunity to drive the 993 car today on the way to buying 5 gallons of 100 octane unleaded. On the way home, and being very certain the car would not ping since I had the gas octane up to about 94, I had my foot in the throttle wherever possible (withing the speed limits, of course!). That Varioram induction sound at about 5,000 RPM is just evil And having the Fabspeed air box, or lack therof, may have contributed to the sound. Now top this off with a set of Fabspeed Supercup and you know I was in heaven, a little deaf, but in aural heaven!

Martin, you started this thread by describing the location as "left passenger" isn't it on the drivers side as indicated in the photos? There's only one of these things - right? On the left as you face the engine, or am I reading what you wrote wrong?

Funny, those of you who know Robert Linton may recall he posted not long ago about a "5hp Gizmo" he was working on.
I wonder if it is this part....maybe a larger sized varioram splitter allowing for increased vacuum and increase of 5hp ?
Mod minds want to know...

Martin and FO3- Since you both have had yours replaced, can you confirm that the new part is not collapsed if you were to take a look at it now? Just amazing that almost all who have checked theirs have found it bad.

I checked mine -- slightly pinched. Is it possible that the unsupported weight of the tube extending toward the driver's side away from the splitter is contributing to the pinching? It looks to me like that tube constantly exerts a downward pull on the splitter that may be causing the splitter to bend. I haven't had time to look closely at all the surrounding hardware, but can the tube be supported somehow to at least eliminate this as a possible contributing cause?

Fix the beast...
The metal "O" ring insertion to the center of the splitter seems to be the fix. Replace it the splitter without thgis fix, it will just pinch again. I can see why Porsche would use rubber, lots of vibration back there and heat too, a tough environment.
Drive the appropriate length tube into the splitter...into the big end. As the tube diameter pinches off, that will stop the travel of the inserted tube. Get out your trust drill and drill holes for the tubes perpendicular to the primary tube...that seems to be the trick. This sage like advice was posted earlier I believe.

I agree, the brass tube fix seems to be a great solution, and one I will try to employ. It just seemed odd to me, though, that the rubber splitter would be forced to support the weight of the laterally-oriented tube. To my eye, it looks like the tube is pulling the splitter down, causing the pinching. Probably not the best original design for that part.
Anyway, as conceived by several and executed by Jeff, it looks like we have a winning solution. As you note, Martin, the sage Mr. Walrod is right: "Is this a great place or what?"

Well, I just looked at mine and it was totally collapsed. I don't see how anything could flow through it.
I think I'm going to do the brass insert, but might make the insert much longer and drill two over-sized holes in it to line up with the other connections.
