Had a peek at mine tonight. Yep, collapsed!!

Let's see, what was that part #?

For those still not certain where this part is located, I took a couple of shots from aways back to give you some perspective. You can even check this part without removing anything.

First shot is overall engine bay. Orange trouble light on the left.

Second picture is looking down over the blower. If you look closely, you can see the collaped part even from here.

Third is closeup of the part. Clearly collapsed.

Fourth is my homemade "girdle" to help the rubber hose hold it's shape and perhaps not collapse. This is my temporary fix until I can get the part through the mail. Hey, can't hurt!

Thanks again, Martin, for the heads up.

Great post and pictures everyone, thanks. I was at a dealer and just for kicks I pointed it out to the mechanic and asked if it was faulty ( mine is pinched a bit like the photos) He said it was OK>..?? After the tech session, which was great, I certainly trust Callas over the dealer any day. Nice to have some feedback from those who have done the repair..Can someone post a picture of the replaced part? It would be great to show the comparison.

Martin, Kim, thanks for the advises and pictures.

As it's so easy to check, I did mine tonight, and... it's collapsed too!
By disconnecting the tube I noticed it was under vacuum. This means that tube stays under vacuum even when the engine is stopped (mine didn't run since at least 2 weeks!). I think it's a hard job for a simple rubber tube which is supposed to stay in shape!

What do you guys would thing of introducing a plastic ring inside the tube. A ring wide enough to stay tight in place and may be a little bit modified not to disturb the vacuum to the 2 smaller tubes connected to it.

Hi JP,
I was thinking the same thing. I was thinking about using an appropriately clearanced bit of stainless or hard plastic tubing inside the rubber housing. I will need to make darn sure that it could not be drawn into other parts of the engine though.

A plastic shunt inside the tuber is a great idea. Insert shunt with appropriate adhesive. Next, drill the appropriare holes for the two other inlet/outlets, and voila, the part can no longer collapse.

Mine arrives from Pelican parts today, but . . . the shunt idea seems like a natural remedy, unless of course these attachments are supposed to flex and compress at a certain point in a regulating valve like manner. Good to know you have all experienced a noticable difference after the change. Explains now why I am so slow at Willow. LOL

Dumb question, but is there only one? Aren't there two varioram "plungers"?

How much was the part from Pelican? I haven't had a chance to drive my car much since the fix but it did feel quicker. Also, Callas removed my engine tray, which is not easy for me to do because the car is so low. Callas cleaned the tray and put it in a bag for me. You would not believe how clean the tray looked after they were done with it. It looked brand new. These guys were very detailed; very close in the level of attention paid to the car as TRE IMO.

Thanks for the pics Kelly. Very...very helpful. Will try to check tonight.

For those who have done this, how simple is the fix? Looks like...
1) Unplug the collapsed hose from the 3 connecting tubes
2) Reconnect tubes with the new hose.

Sounds almost too easy...is there more to it?

What was that part no. again??

Mine is collapsed also. It seems like this is VERY common, almost to common. Are we sure this part does not remain collapsed and then "inflate" when varioram is "turned on"?

Talking Good question but, vacuum is being pulled through the line...

I would think this would be negative pressure and tend to pull the tubing flat. All I know is that Tony Callas mentioned this as a trouble spot on the 993 cars, based on his experience. Tony has established an excellent reputation as a chief mechanic, crew chiew, shop owner, etc. I don't think he would mislead us to sell a cheesy little part....especially knowing that lots of us will simply go on-line and by the part circumventing a visit to a shop. They sell the part on Pllican according to Slap Shot!

Be that as it may, I had mine replaced and the car appears to run better, in my opinion.

Best regards,

Martin, Thanks for finding this and bringing it up to the group! This is what this board is all about!!

Kelly, Thanks for taking the pix, cuts a lot of manhours searching for that part.
