Agree this was a great thread revival Home Depot spring took longer to get from Home D than it took to install. I've read through all the posts a couple times and didn't see if it was known if the fix solves the problem at the high end or low end? Reason I say this in my case is the car felt very flat in the mid range 3-5k, but after the fix seemed to improve there.

So is the collapsed tube causing the varioram to stay at the high rpm position, or the low rpm position? Either way the fix will bring back an audible change at 5k rpm.

Parts arrived few days ago. NEK and I completed our quickest DIY ever. It took about 15 minutes to do both cars, and not one busted nuckle
Nathan's targa had approx 90% blockage. Mine was approx 40%

Cool. Always enjoy pics of failed parts.

Nam, I'm curious, what made you decide to replace rather than do the spring trick. Also,,,, the $10,000 question, did either of you notice any difference driving afterwards?

Jamie- we decided not to mod it with the spring because it'll be several more years before this new replacement part fails again.....at least I hope so. It was somewhere in the neighborhood of $10/ea.

I haven't driven mine yet, but Nathan said he did feel a subtle difference in power and sound when the V-tech...uh I mean Vram kicked in at 5k rpm.

Question

I am not a professional mechanic, but the fix to this is to replace a $10 part. This is a vacuum hose, would it be possible to suck the spring into the engine should it come loose?

No way the spring is coming out on its own.

Way too snug of a fit.

Nam, is there just one per car?

I was looking it up to see if Pelican had it and they do - but it says 2 per car

Is there another one I don't know about, or is that just Pelican throwing us on a wild goose chase

For what it's worth, I searched the 993 Katalog and there was only one listing for the part, and it was for one piece.

I just fixed my bent rubber connection by using a metal spring inside the rubber connection part to keep the passage fully open. I feel as if I was doing a heart surgery on my Porsche using a stint ( spring ) to get the full 100% vacuum to the varioram system.... Thanks for the information.....

Ad me to the list, bought my part off of ebay for $16.00 delivered. There is a definite increase in "pull", not night and day difference but noticeable. Install took maybe 10 minutes, glad I did it.

Thanks for bumping this thread. I just had a quick look and sure enough callapsed splitter. I'll do the spring fix first.

Edit:

Went back in the garage and found a bunch of perfect size springs laying around......

and with spring installed

A 15 min job and zero dollars spent.

Great thread. Just did big service on mine, including plug wires, and took it for its first long drive tonight. Not long into the drive I was pretty sure the Varioram wasn't doing its thing so searched for this thread. My hose looks good from what I can see.

After poking around in there for a bit I went for another drive. Now I'm not so sure if it is or isn't working. And driving around "testing" it's operation is going to get me arrested.
