997s like 993s ....and that bothers some folks
OK...so I was reading the thread over on RennTeam where disparaging opinions were being expressed of how it appeared that Porsche was marching back in time with the supposed shape of the 997.....(marching back to something that looked, heaven forbid, like a 993)....and I thought it would be intersting to hear what this (993) board thought of the idea of Porsche revisiting some of the 993 lines...if that actually happened....GreggT

It's all personal opinion...but for my taste I too think the 997 is a step in the right direction of bringing some of the flairs back to the sides as in the 993.

I love the 993 shape
I also like the GT3 RS body, nice style and flares as well. Too bad they don't have a street car from the factory with the GT3RS body...maybe the 997.

Even as a 964 owner, I think the 'alleged/proposed' 993 look is much better. I really couldn't stomach buying a 996 as they are now - except maybe the GT3, but that would be for entirely different reasons

Asking a 993 owner this question is like asking a pilot if he likes to fly. The response should be pretty obvious. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

this thread is humorous because i will bet anything that more people object to the 996 looking like the 986 than the next gen 997 (freshened 996 platform) and 998 (all new???) cars looking like something with hips.
and i also bet that there would be more sales of 911s once they properly differentiate the 2 cars. a lot of people have issues spending $75k or more for a car to be confused with a $55k car.
oh wait, that's what my car used to be worth......

I'm a '99 996 C4 owner and am proud to own an example of one of the last 911's to be produced WITHOUT cupholders! (They came in 2001, I think)
In future, Porsche's will be judged not by the air/water cooled argument, but by cupholders or no cupholders argument. Significant weight saving achieved on my car, I'm sure.
996's should really be offered with a no-cost cupholder delete.

I like the projected 997 look and being a current 993 owner, I'm a little biased. I think when it comes out there's going to be quite a bit of 993 owners migrating over (I'd keep the 993 because it's still air-cooled ).
The 996 technology is good and putting a wider look on the technology would make it even better.
I do hope they fix the semi-dry sump system w/ the non-turbo engines when they come out w/ the 997. Wonder what other goodies Porsche has in store for us w/ the 997?

I posed this same scenario to a Porsche salesman friend of mine, and he was skeptical. It's been years since he's heard of anyone mentioning the looks of a 993 over a 996. The general population got over that, if there ever was an issue, back in 1998. Most people love the look of the 996's (then again, the people who don't won't go to the dealerships, so he wouldn't hear from them), and don't know my '95 is not brand new. Those of use who are even aware of what a Driver's Ed event is, read Rennlist religiously, perform our own maintenance, and preach about the subtle nuances from model to model can be considered the extreme wackos. Probably less than 1% of the "Porsche" population. There won't be a large migration of 993 owners ready to jump into the next model, because there aren't that many of us to begin with. The 996 is selling quite well, if not better than the 993 did. There is no negative feeling out there in the real world towards the 996.
But I agree, of course, that the pictures of the 997 look vastly better than the 996, and popularity should improve as a result.

My $.02 I'll be very interested in the reaction of the current crop of 996 owners. While a 996/7 is very much out of my reach, I hope the design is able to retain the rear "look" of the 996. This is one aspect of the design I thought they really nailed. I've been disappointed that the fenders can look so wiiidddeee from the rear, and yet be so invisible from the front/side. While some people really miss the air/cooled Flat 6, I really don't. In fact, I salivate when contemplating a wet Flat/V 8.

I haven't made many friends mentioning that the 986 and 996 look the same unless they have an aero kit.
With the aero kit they like a ford taurus...
