My first car was a truck, but then again that wasn't so weird for a kid in Mississippi. It was a 1977 Datsun King Cab Pickup, the first year that they made them, I think. It was five years old when I got it, and it had been painted a weird shade of bright blue that would probably appeal to kids today. The front bench seat had been recovered in a dark blue felt-like material with white polka-dots. Holy cow that was a tacky truck, but it hauled me and my friends all over the place!

My first real "car" was a 1985 Merkur XR4Ti, which was a European Ford Sierra with the US 4 cynlinder turbo engine (a'la Mustang SVT) and sold through Lincoln-Mercury dealers. A neat looking car, some might say weird, but it was pretty much a lemon due to drivetrain bolt-size mismatches, etc. I remember that it did 0-60 in 8.0 seconds, just a bit slower than the SVT and quicker than the Camaros of the era. Most V6 family sedans are quicker today, but then again it's been a while since the bad old days of the 70's and early 80's.

How quick were Porsches of that era? The books I'm reading make the US 911s during those times sound underpowered and slow.

Cheers!

Hey DJF1,

I still have a Renault 5! Its my third car and I use it almost every other day. Its great to go shopping and do all those small drives the Porsche doesn't enjoy.

Hey that reminds me. My very first was a Brown 911 Shuco clockwork car with butterfly shaped key and all. They don't make toys like that any more.

When I was 16, a 1971 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon, 440cu engine. Loved Gas! My Father used to joke, 'Hey car, where you going with that boy"

First car I bought was a 1979 99 Saab Turbo, until the engine head cracked!

The first car I bought was a '72 Plymouth 'cuda 340 4 speed - still have it. The car I drove before that was my folks' VW Dasher diesel. 48hp to 300+hp...

(I'm between 993s - does my post count? :-)

A 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Monza. No power, a ton of oversteer, but surprisingly, a lot of fun to drive. I still remember the flat front floorboard and the bucket seats, which were a rarity at the time.

1989 Ford Probe GT (the turbocharged version, not the later V-6). I learned a lot about torque steer driving that car.

My first transport was a Suzuki 350 followed by a Suzuki GS750. I bought my first car in graduate school (I think I was 27 at the time). It was a new '82 Honda Prelude. My wife was convinced we were going to go broke immediately afterward. (Student loans were wonderful). That car was a champ and when we sold it at 130k miles 12 years later it was still running strong.

1984 Nissan 200SX...which my friends named the marshmallow. It earned that nick name after the firewall was put to the test. One April morning I awoke to my fathers screaming voice "get outta bed your cars on fire, and still in the garage." We pushed the car into the street and watched it become engulfed in flames. It was a sad moment as I watched the fire dept. use a saw to cut the hood open and filled the interior with as much water as phisically possible. A tragic end to the life of my first vehicle.

The first car that was really mine was a 57 MGA which I bought in 1960. I had been driving Daddy's car before then. This shows what an old fart I am.

1973 dodge Colt that I purchased for US$270.00. The car had no door panels, no air, no radio, the trunk was rusted, it was dropped completely to the floor (well… almost). It had three different colors, etc…

I repaired the rust with some thin galvanized metal sheets and bondo and I painted the car “Rust Oleum Gloss Black”, yes, with a paintbrush! From a distance you could not see the brush lines. Made the interior door panels out of ¼” wood panel, installed new springs and shocks, added a radio and voila! I had a car.

The car only lasted for 1 ½ years… all that traveling from/to the university every weekend killed it. One Sunday it simply did not want to start… sold it for US$100.00 the next weekend.

Let’s see, the history of my cars:

1985 10 speed Huffy Bicycle
1973 Dodge Colt
back to the 1985 10 speed Huffy Bicycle
1985 Honda Prelude
