Anyone have a picture of a 993 with BBS RE wheels? I've searched almost everywhere but i can't find one. I've already seen the tirerack thing but i want to see an actual picture so I can get a feeling as to how the offset affects the flare of the spokes and such. Thanks!
Jimmy, dont have any pics for you but I,m sure they will come from some rennlister out there soon. I did notice you Pcars. I am the guy out there selling his silver/natural 03 GT2 to get a 993 car (tt, C2S, C$S?). You have two. How do you like yours? Excitment factor, etc. I simply have decided to not have so much invested in one car. If money was no issue, I would mod the GT2 for serious track/street duty and buy 5 or 6 other Porsches for my collection. Dreamin of course....................................Feelings on retaining value over the next 5 years for the various models ? Thanks, Craig
Hi Craig. The 993 is much different from the 996, but i'm sure you already knew that.
Let's took at the handling first. The 996 C4 compared to the 993 C2 feels more sure footed in the turns, and I'm pretty sure it's faster in tight turns, no doubt due to the 4 wheel drive. Also in the 993 C2 at high speed turns, you can feel the weight of the rear. It feels like the rear wants to swing out but never does. I've never felt this in the 996 so the first time I drove the 993 it was a bit nerve wrecking, especially since I was on the 110 freeway at the time. However, I've never driven a rear wheel drive 996 so I don't know how those compare. Like everyone says, the 993 feels more raw, more connected. I've gotten to the point where I don't like having to drive in a fashion that can land me in jail just to have fun with my car. I can drive the 993 at legal speed limits and still have fun. The 996 is so sure-footed that it can be a little boring at times, if that makes any sense. Overall feel is, the 993 is more fun.
Power. My father seems to think the 993 is a bit faster than the 996. I seem to think the opposite. So, we can conclude that the cars are very comparable in this department. The 993 is a 96 model with the varioram and the 996 is a 02 model with the 3.6 liter engine. I think the previous owner of the 993 may have done a reflash upgrade on the ECU chip since the stock 96 ECU was replaced with a 97 ECU (96 ECU's cannot be upgraded) and the car also has RSR mufflers. The 996 was bought new and is completely stock.
Drivetrain. The shifter on the 993 feels smoother and slicker than the 996. The 996 has a bit of a roughness to it. However, the position of the shifter on the 996 is higher up and thus closer to the steering wheel. The 993 is down lower. I prefer the 996 shifter position, but ultimately the 993 shifter feels nicer. Shift gate distances are identical and both cars are stock in this department.
The 993 does indeed feel much "older" than the 996. The 993 actually feels older than it really is, from the way the door clinks when closing it to the gauge cluster and the fact that the odometer is not digital. It's very retro feeling.
I don't know what else to comment about. These few things are what stick out. Feel free to ask me any additional questions about the two cars. I could only imagine the fun factor of the GT2!
Here's a picture of my car with the RE wheels. I had been looking for some 5 spokes but gave up. The wheels really changed the look of the car. I like them.
Here's a couple pictures, one sitting and one at speed.
