I read "somewhere" a while back about an option of a rear seat shelf with locking compartments in place of the standard rear seats. Does anybody have any infomation on this option. I have not seen it advertised anywhere and a Porsche salesman was not aware of such an option. I think it would be particularly useful since the back seats are basically useless! My 964 back seats at least folded down to provide a shelf. Any input or other ideas would be appreciated.

Gary;
The package shelf first appeared with the 964's--RSA, American Roadsters, and later 964 cabs. I have collected a few to install in cars that didn't have them. I would usually pay between $250.00 to $400.00 for them, depending on there shape. You see them at swap meets and the classifieds. They have a list price of around $2,400.00. Good luck

The option your asking about was called the "rear seat delete" option. I retro'd the kit (purchased from a Porsche recycler) in my 1996 993 cabrio, replacing the useless rear seat with a usefull shelf and two storage compartments. I had to re-carpet and re-leather the unit (easy a an interior shop), and the result is excellent. I did the physical removal of the old seats and seat back "pod" and installed the replacement shelf myself with hand tools. Let me know if you need further information. I recommend the conversion, resulting in a true two-seater (car pool lane) and a usefull rear storage area.
