Hey B-Line, you've got a little fight in ya kid...philosophically speaking, it was Aristotle who said that "man" should not even begin to contemplate himself until he is at least 30 years of age...I believe the problem here is there are two distinct generations which are having a diffficult time comminicating with each other...the fact that younger people have access to higher priced toys is not a bad thing, it is simply a domain that used to be reserved for those who had "earned it," not only financially, but through life experience...it is the same as watching the rich high school kid who drives whatever Daddy bestows upon him or her...you just can not appreciate some things at an early age...this is what I believe many of us "older" people are intimating...we look at our 911's differently than you simply because we are at a different place in our lives...again, this is not to say that we are better, it is to say that it would be like you hangin with a group of thirteen year olds discussing how great it was feelin up Mary Jo ...the bottom line is that we must all coexist on this board because it in the interest of our cars...afterall, it's not just the people, it's the cars

Anir,

As I said in my previous post, I do think an OT board would be deserted, but the relevant question is why? The only answer that makes sense to me is that OT posters want the audience that the 993 board can supply. Why would it be inappropriate to converse about OT topics on a different board? An OT section would be unused because the majority of people want to read relevant posts and, as such, they would have no use for an OT forum.

IMHO a post that inquiries about a lister's profession and the type of cars they have is nothing more than a forum to boost one's ego with a list of their latest "toys". I think (hope) we all are proud of what we have achieved in life thus far. You'd think achievement would be enough without the "hey look what I have" posts.

Brandon,

I too find that "the majority people of this board articulate, thoughtful, interesting, and true contributors." What I don't understand is why a separate OT section dedicated to a more personal exchange would in any way hinder the ability for online friendships. If anything, this type of forum should foster friendships.

Tito,

Yes, everyone can simply not click an OT post, but what is so offensive about requiring a separate "click" to an OT section for such exchanges? How would an OT section advance censorship? Listers would feel more at ease to converse on a social level. If anything an OT section encourages free speech and the exchange of different opinions on a variety of subjects. Would you feel comfortable discussing politics or religion on the 993 board? Probably not. If topics such as these interest you an OT forum would allow you the opportunity to discuss your views if you so choose.

John,
Personally, I enjoy the mix of on and off topic related discussion that takes place on this board.
Sometimes I enjoy the technical questions at other times the OT subjects are more fun. The way the board is at present I get to choose at a glance.

I still think that banning (ie censoring) a certain type of post from the board is a little counter productive and the board will suffer in the long run as topics dry up and the discussion becomes repetitive - why not replace it with a FAQ or microfiche .

May be the solution is to have another purely techinical board that people can visit - or is that just the same thing that you are suggesting. But this particular board has more to offer than just hard facts. I feel that I have gotten to know some interesting people from around the world - not just the answer to my questions.

This topic itself is off topic (as already mentioned), but represents a stimulating and interesting exchange of views. Strictly speaking we should take it somewhere else if we were to observe only technical topics on this board.

I do however agree that snobbery and showing off is unwelcome, but to my knowledge this has not been rife on this board.

I hope that the powers that be (John) recognise that there is more to this board than techincal question answering - although I am very grateful for that. So please don't ban/censor/redirect 'OT' posts.

Best regards
Tito.

Kim,

I know what you mean about the work that would be involved to "police" the board. The administrator already spends much of his time dealing with the board and "policing" it would make it a full-time job.

I don't think "policing" would be necessary, though. Bottom line is that all the posters are intelligent and mature. I think that if there was an OT forum listers would be respectful and considerate enough to take their post to the appropriate forum. As it is now, I think most know when a post is out of hand but there is not a real "known" appropriate forum for an exchange. Besides, with an OT forum think of all the interaction that could be had with members of the other Rennlist boards, 911, 964, 993, 996, etc. They may not own a 993 but they are probably still good people. Although I don't drink, I think a post about your favorite beer can be fun. I just wonder whether the 993 board is the best forum.

As for an on-topic post getting out of hand with personal content, yes it will happen from time to time. Personally, I take personal conversation off the board and converse via email, but again I think the listers are considerate enough that these posts wouldn't become overwhelming.

Tito,

I don't, nor should I, have the power to make any of the changes I suggest. That is up the administrator, it is his board to do with what he may feel appropriate.

I find the "censorship" argument odd. When was it suggested that such posts be banned? How is providing a more appropriate place for a personal exchange in any way censorship? Cant friendships occur in such an environment?

Based upon the emails I have received and the replies to this post, it appears as though the majority of listers prefer to keep the 993 board the way that it is and, as I said before, that is fine by me, the majority opinion should control. I certaintly wont leave the board because of this. I had my rather long-winded rant and that is really all I needed.

IMHO, I find this board great. It is very dynamic, you get answers very quickly, and some very informative technical topics, as well as "softer" Porsche issues. As long as it remains a community where people with other opinions are respected, and etiquette is observed, I have no problems. This does not mean we can't have heated discussions now and then, just as long as nobody starts getting aggressive or personal. Differences of opinion make life interesting.

John,

I take your point most of us would agree that some recent posts have been OT, some even immature. I have never been to roadfly, but so far these posts here have, in my view, have not been too disruptive and easy to avoid. That may change and maybe a rethink at that stage would be necessary.

There is already I believe a general discussion forum on this board (please correct me if I am wrong) but people choose to post some OT topics here from time to time. The only remaining way , that I can see to keep this board strictly on T as opposed to OT, is to screen the posts and delete/ redirect them as appropriate ie to censor them.

I hope John (D) realised that I was referring to him in my earlier post.

Tito.

DJF1,

You took my thoughts.

Money (or age) doesn't make a person more mature or 'classy' etc. You need something else to be able to achieve those things. Of course, rich & old can be those things but so can a bum in a street corner.

B.B. King isn't the fastest or the best guitar player there is, but boy does he have class

You may be right. OK, tonight I'll go home, get drunk and read the board. I take no responsibility for posting a Killz topic, though. There is this Honda Civic with a big tailpipe that I've had my eye on during my ride home. Who knows, I may even dig up last year's income statement.

John,

What?! You're from Texas and you don't drink? Next, you'll be telling me you don't wear exotic skin boots or shoot armadillos!

Just kidding both you and I. I grew up in Texas, and actually rarely drink myself nowadays.

I appreciate your valid comments on this and other posts. This is a great board!
