Default CANADIAN PRICES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone, this is my first time post.

I am looking to buy a C2S or I may stretch the budget to look for a 993 tt. Looking at prices here in Vancouver, I am shocked at what they are going for. I realize some of these vendors bought cars when the Canadian dollar was lower; therefore, it did not look like as bad of a deal when when it was 0.64 to a U.S dollar. (I am saying this as some of these cars have been on websites for a long time).

I believe in free enterprise and all the power to them if they can get these prices but I won't be buying here. Here is a small sample:

Weissach Motors: Seem to have a good reputation in town; however, am I the only one who thinks they have their heads in clouds. This is one example of many with there inventory in which there prices seem to be insane "WHO IS PAYING THESE PRICES"

1996---Green with grey leather and ruf wheels $112,900 (46,000 KM)
THERE ARE MANY EXAMPLES OF THIS IN THEIR INVENTORY HOWEVER I DON'T WANT TO QUOTE WITHOUT EXACT PRICES AND SPECS. YOU CAN LOOK AT WWW.WEISSACH.COM to see what I am talking about.

At todays exchange rate that would equal out to approx 90,000 to 92,000 AMERICAN. A turbo in nice shape with a colour that I think many will say is not popular would be going for 70,000 72,000 U.S

I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM PAYING A PREMIUM FOR A CANADIAN CAR BUT IS 20,000 TO 25,000 MORE WORTH IT WHEN I CAN GO DOWN TO SEATTLE.

IT SEEMS IN CANADA THEY HAVE HAD US BY THE COCUNUTS FOR THE LAST NUMBER OF YEARS BECAUSE OF THE EXCHANGE RATE; HOWEVER, I THINK THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE FOR THE BETTER.

WHAT DO FELLOW CANADIANS THINK OF THE PRICING OF 993'S IN CANADA AND SPECIFICALLY PEOPLE IN VANCOUVER.

Tim,

I've bought several Porsches through Weissach in Vancouver. I have always been treated fairly and the pricing has been consistent with the quality of the vehicle. That green turbo you are describing is a gorgeous car with very low km. Weissach only brings in very high quality, no-stories cars that look and drive like new. I've seen many private cars sell for cheaper, but they are not in the same league as the cars on their showroom floor.

I'll give you an example of how much energy they put into a used car. They took my 91 Turbo in on trade for the 993 Turbo. I felt the 91 car was near perfect and I am very particular about my cars, I spare no expense. They still put a full set of rotors, pads, fixed an oil leak that had never leaked a drop on the ground and cleaned up some of the worn leather in the interior. The interior, exterior and engine compartment looked brand new. They spent a total of $4k in parts alone + labour. There is no way I would have put that in to sell to a private buyer.

Given the money, time and risk they put into my 91 Turbo, I think the prices they charge are fair. If you have a problem four days after buying your new car, I know that they will take care of you. In this case, you really do get what you pay for.

I'll also provide some additional info as I was doing some research recently on bringing a 993TT across the border as a track car. The total cost for bringing a car here is not as simple as just the currency conversion. This is what I have been able to dig up so far, there may be more costs:

Car: 1996 993 Turbo
Price: US$72,000
Currency conversion: 1.22
Duties: 9%
Convert to Canadian spec: US$2k for Odometer including install + $500 for DRL module+install
Shipping: US$1,800

Total costs: US$72k * 1.22 = $87.84k * 1.09 = $95.75k + $2k + $0.5k + $1.8k = $100k

When all was said and done, when you include airfare, etc to fly around the US looking for the right car, it still made more sense to buy local for my needs and risk/reward ratio.

Thanks FC for the vote of confidence, we try very hard to keep to the best cars and continually work to keep the value of perfect cars where it should be, we have never claimed to be the cheapest, maybe the best...thats always a work in progress.
the strong canadian dollar is what is fueling these conversations and we are not in a position to react or change things, the bank of canada also has the same problem.
buying US cars or any car anywhere requires diligence and buying from folks that have been around for 25 years would mean a lot to me, I can only hope others share this thought.
I do know of a higher km car in the mid 80's here and welcome a phone call.

kind regards

I actually find the prices you quote interesting. I've found that in Ontario at least (I know different part of the country) that 993 prices are generally quite a bit lower than they tend to be in the U.S. (haven't looked at Turbos however). On the other hand, 996s seem to be holding their value considerable better. I'm not sure if Canadians seem to enjoy and appreciate the increased practicality/newness of the 996s more than Americans, or if there are just perhaps less traditional air-cooled fanatics to keep the prices up? I guess you just need to decide how much work you are willing to do to convert the car to Canadian specs. I'm not sure what is involved, but it will no doubt cost a bit... in addition to transportation costs.

The vast majority of people only buy cars in their local market so comparisons to other markets aren't that relevant for the majority.

My personal experience is that cars are cheaper in Ontario than BC. They also have lots of salt on the road so one needs to be more careful.

At the current exchange rate, after factoring in duties, transportation, etc., you can likely/definitely find cheaper car in the US. You have to be prepared to go through the hassle (just did it and it is a bit of a hassle, not a lot) of getting it checked out (visually and mechanically), transporting it and then bringing it across the border.

The current duty on 993's is 6.1%. At least that is what I paid and was also quoted 3 times in conversations with Cdn Customs.

I didn't have to change my speedo out. FC-racer, I am surprised that you had to. Did it have the speeds in km/h? Mine that imperial measures in large numbers and metric in smaller.

Daytime running lights cost me C$400. The only other thing I had to buy was a bolt to attach a kiddie seat to. C$7.00.

The only other thing I would add is that Weissach does have a very good reputation. For some people buying a car from a reputable dealer is important. For others it isn't.

I agree with ientre911 on his cost estimates. Why 2K for a speedo???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry but this is a bit insane... besides the speedo already on the US car has KM on and me too i did not need to change that. Anyway you slice it with the USD sliding daily toward the CND ( less than 1.20 now) the car prices sure look inflated in Canada. While i cannot blame Weissach for this or any other dealer for than matter, unfortunately it will be the norm that the cars in Canada will cost and arm and a leg compared to the US. If dealers try to lower the values then the public will also loose on value... true the dealers this way will make a killing, but its a visious cycle and if one can will buy their car in the US.
I must also say that the people at Weissach when I met them were super friendly and accomodating.

In no way am I trying to offend Weissach. They do have a good reputation; however, like one of the other posters said as the dollar keeps climbling they will have a harder time justifing these prices.

Tim
I have a 98 C2S coming in 3-4 weeks, 100 km, one owner and dealer serviced since new, requires the usual "Weissach" tidy up, call me if you are interested and the price will be right as is.

Interesting topic and this is what I have been thinking of lately, to buy a car from US and ship it over to Canada due to the advantage of currency exchange rate. The selection in US is much bigger than what we have in Canada and one is allowed to be picky, whereas in Canada the selection is limited and thus car price is high.
If the Canadian:US exchange rate remains at around 1.20, I wonder if the 2005 new car prices in Canada will adjust downward accordingly.
Weissach is a great place and the people there are very helpful. I serviced my 993 there. But the green 993TT's asking price is too high and may sit in their lot for a while.
