Recaro seats for big people
Hi fellow P car owners
I was thinking of some new seats (Recaro) to help with occasional track and slalom days. Trouble is I am 6 foot 2 and about 250 lbs. The standard seats offer little lateral support for my size and weight. Any suggestion from some our larger P car owners is welcomed.
many thanks from Germany

Do you want racing shells? Or just more aggresive seats that recline?
If the first look at MOMO, Sparco and maybe Recaro as they make seats for larger builds.
Check with Gert at <a href="http://www.carnewal.com" target="_blank">www.carnewal.com</a> He carries Recaros and factory sport seats.

Hi, I'll second Greg's suggestion to check out the Sparco seats. I'm 6'1" and 240 lbs., so we're in the same range.
I've used Sparco Evo 2's in a Boxster and a 993, and they're a great fit. Sparco also makes the Evo 3's that are even bigger, but they're actually too big for me.
I now have a set of Sparco Torinos in the Boxster, which I feel are a better combination seat. They have more aggressive bolsters than the stock seats, but they're not as restrictive as the Evo 2's are. I've used them with a 4-point harness, and with an adapter a 5-point harness would work.
A friend of mine who does lots of track days has the Sparco Milanos in his 993. He's an ex-football player and is a big guy, and is happy with his seats. The Milanos are available with Alcantra material stock or leather optional, and are a bit more upscale than the Torinos and include lumbar adjustment in addition to the reclining seatback.

If you want the seats just for street use I would say look to find used 1995 993 sports seats. Since you are in Germany it would not be hard to find them. You would definately have more support. If you are looking for track use then the Sparco Evo 2. I'm the same size as you are and I can only fit in the EVO 2. In the standard CS style recaros my butt is wedged in there and it is not comfortable at all.
Good luck!

Moring all,
Just woke to a clear sunny German morning - I can hardly believe my luck - I hope the autobahn is clear - Of course I got some good advise too. I will check out the Sparco Evos, and probably get in touch with Gert in Belgium as well.
Danny, Skip, Martin, Greg and Kim
thanks <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" /> <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

I have installed Sparco Evo II seats, both driver and passenger. I think they are great. I am 6'-3" 235 lbs. I have an extremely long body (short legs).
I mounted them using the standard side mount Sparco brackets and sliders. It is a tight fit in a 993 and I still hit the roof with my helmet even with cushions out of the bottom of the seat. But short of a very custom seat mount that may not accommodate my wife driving in auto-x events it works pretty well.

Hi Karry et al,
One more question to those of you who are still watching this thread, again with the problem of a being tall etc etc, the standard steering wheel, is also on my "hit" list - any ideas/recommendations?
again thanks

I changed the steering wheel to the 340mm TechArt 3 spoke wheel. No more knee banging on the steering wheel! If you fancy a smaller one they have a 320mm as well. Its a fantastic wheel and I'm extremely happy with it.
You can see pics through the link on the bottom of my signature.

Danny,
I will try and get a feel of a Techart at the next Slalom day. Being bigger than the average bear, means that the hands sort of follow suit, so I might have to "look and feeling" at the local German accessories shops.
BTW nice photos! (you dont have shares in the carbon fibre business do you

Andrew,
Steering wheels are a very personal choice. You need to decide whether you want an airbag or not. If not, there are some really great choices out there. There was also a thread not too long ago that talked about a steering wheel extension to move the wheel closer to you thus giving you more space for your legs. I think that thread was coming from Australia but am not sure. Try a search on that topic.
Personally, I am thinking of going to the RS wheel that Gert has on his site. It is slightly smaller in diameter and since I use the 6 points all the time the airbag is of little use. Gert also has a cup car steering wheel that a little less refined but looks great as well.
Any other thoughts on my steering wheel selection?

LOL Andrew! I'm bigger than the average bear too...LOL Make sure that you try the right one as they also carry a 365mm 3 spoke wheel which is very different (much like the Boxster/996 wheel) than the 340 or 320 mm wheel. What really exited my about this wheel was the thickness of the wheels on the 9 and 3 oclock position. This is the only wheel that you can actually grab and it feels fantastic! I think the 340mm is just perfect for our cars as it does not obstruct the tach and it clears your knees as well.
Good luck!

BTW how was the autobahn ride You lucky you...
