You've almost talked me out of a 993
I am a previous owner of a Boxster and 944Turbo. I've probably owned over thirty cars over my 50 years. I've read ALOT about Porsche's and read this board frequently without posting. Currently driving an Audi TT quattro coupe which I purchased as a daily driver, when I became tired of pouring thousands into my 951 & lease was up on my Boxster. The 951 was quite a car when it was running. I liked the Boxster too. Ran great, except for when the engine blew at 3k miles.
I've been thinking of moving to a 993. I've considered many 911's over the past eight years and have driven over thirty different cars. Since returning to this board(addiction) I've seen/read so many issues/problems & expenses associated with the 993's that I've nearly decided to forego the search.
Love the looks, love the ride, and the board, but don't like alot of what I've read. Would use it as a daily driver. You guys have darned near talked me out of it!

Since a forum is more than likely used to seek help for a problem, you are unlikely to see posts along the lines of "my car is perfect. Bye"
Also, realise that there is life outside of internet forums. There may be many hundred regular posters on these forums - maybe a couple of thousand. But there were many many thousands of 993s made. So, you are getting a very small, biased sample here.
In summary, these cars are extremely bloody fantastic and the pleasure of being at 6,700 rpm in 2nd is well worth a long search for a well looked after 993.
Good luck!

Jaxon,
I've owned my 993 for over 4 years now and have not had any significant problems. I've had the usual maint issues like fan belts, window switch wear, shocks/springs, etc. Keep in mind that this is a discussion board and a knowledge base. I love this site because it provides information on anything that can possibly be an issue on the 993 or any off-the-wall topics that people post. This certainly does not mean that every 993 will end up with the problems posted. I doubt a site like this would exist if it was just to praise the car or for sheer comaraderie purposes... how short & boring would that be?

Here is what I have spent over and above normal service items in 2.5 years:
- replace sunroof cable. Easy to DIY and $50 in parts.
- lower valve cover seal, $300 parts and labour
- new ballast resistors, $80 and DIY
- replaced noisy rear spoiler bearing. Easy DIY, <$10 parts
- two new window switches, 2 minute instal, $40 parts
That's $192 per year. Too much you say?
Upgrading to race seats, exhaust, xenon headlights, new wheels and clear lenses/silver bulbs was all voluntary, and a lot of fun
edit - steering rack is coming up, but cost currently unknown

yeah.. it is the MODS that are expensive... if you like to just drive a stock car.. you should have very few expenses on a well maintained used 993....

I'm no expert, but IMHO the 993 is by far the best Porsche (and therefore the best car) out there. Sure, you MAY need to replace the valve guides or a leaking steering rack, but in the overall scheme of Porschedome, these things are minor. Compared to most other cars, these things are basically bullitproof.

Talked you out of it? You're kidding, right? If you've been on this board, then you know how much we love our 993's. If you've been on this board, then you have also heard about how many of us have not had any problems or have had very few, if any, significant ones. These cars are fast and pretty darn bullet-proof. Chatter here seems to center around the CEL/SAI issue with 96-98's. Get a '95 like I did and stop worrying about it, or just buy one like many other non-'95 owners who have not had any CEL issues.
Here are the problems I've had with my car since I bought it last November 2002:
1) Wiring harness-replaced under EJ's recall. Knew this going into the purchase.
2) Ummm.....
That's it. One. Uno. A single "problem". IMVHO, not too shabby for an almost ten year old car that does dual duty as a track steed.
Know what the biggest unforeseen cost is? Pulling back on the syringe to mix high octane fuel with your blood and realizing it could be so much more fun with...GT3 seats...PSS-9's...superlight wheels...a louder muffler...a supercharger...a smaller steering wheel...an RS wing. It goes on and on, but that's hardly the car's fault.
If you've been lusting after the sublime good looks and performance of a 993, do your homework and just do it.

Am totally pleased with my 993 and has been rock solid (knock on wood). What will drain your wallet is upgrades, which the 993 really doesnt need that many of. Its all about making an awesome car even better..
Kinda shocked that you feel this way about the 993. Cruz over the 996 board, that will scare you..FWIW

I have to laugh too...If you have come looking for the issues and info about 993s, well then you found the right place. If you have come to find out how much we LOVE our cars, that is even easier to find here. Everyone here is passionate about their cars and this shows in the discussions of the few issues surrounding these bullet-proof cars.
An Audi TT over a 993... that is a personal choice, one that I certainly would not make.
What was your question anyway?
Cheers
