Default PET CD's being sold: Legal too

Suncoast Porsche in Florida is selling the PET CD. It's a genuine Porsche part and it even has the 997 parts on it. It is in a Pdf. format.

They have them listed on ebay.

Hi Ron,

Pet is a program not an Acrobat file. There are illegal copies of the shop manuals floating around in PDF though. Are you sure its the PET program? If so then its a change of policy for Porsche. How much is it?

Cheers,

Mike

Yeah I took a look as well....the picture at the bottom looks like a very official Porsche cover on that CD. They must of snapped the screens from PET and then put them in a PDF. Price is certainly right!

Cheers,

Mike

If a dealer is selling them, I doubt very much that they're illegal.
Now, if some numnut is selling them out of his garage - that's different.

If you're wondering about the value of these, they are helpful when working on your car, and not just to find a part number. The breakaway pictures help in finding hidden nuts or seeing how items go back together.

So, if the new PET is in pdf format, do you have the search features of the "old" PET?

Todd is correct. New versions of PET are in pdf. Part number is 000-043-400-05. $14.95 retail.

My version is dated February 04. No 997 info, but it does contain all the Carrera GT parts/diagrams, which make for some interesting browsing all on their own.

While its a matter of preference, I find the new pdf version much easier to use/navigate than the previous version of PET that I have which required actual installation on your PC to operate.

The newer versions come in both a .pdf and a regular version. I have both, but prefer the regular installed version. I personally find it easier to find things, and develop parts lists and kits with this version.

Porsche is selling the PET CD as of September 2004 in Germany, and then in Europe. You can simply walk into the local Porsche dealer and buy the CD. So as of now, it's legal.

This is indeed change of policy: until now, it has always been for Porsche use only.

Officially, that is..

Speaking from ignorance-what is the difference in navigating a pdf format as opposed to a "regular" format-and to look really naieve-what does regular mean in regards to this cd?

TIA

I've never understood why the PET CD would be illegal. Why wouldn't Porsche want you to look up genuine Porsche parts that you want to buy from them?

Not that I would know, but.... I believe the original programmers of the PET were contracted by PAG, and held PAG to their copyright insofar as "use" and limitations to distribution to authorized dealers (as licensed). While Porsche held proprietary claim as to the "content" in parts, diagrams, part numbers - the software developers (3rd party) held the "copyright" on the software that delivered those up, and it was incumbent on PAG to protect their interests and claims. One could ask if the 3rd party claims expired on that code, or PAG bought out their rights to re-distribute after the license...

As well - Porsche part numbers ARE protected. Ask any non-authorized dealer what they can "list" as order numbers in their catalog....

Just an FYI....

John D.
