Default A sad day for one of the nicest 993 GTR's in South Africa

Some time ago I posted this thread about Brian White's 993 GTR -

Well, sadly, this car is no more. Brian rolled his 993 going through the sweeper down the mineshaft at the Kyalami fun day on Saturday. So bad that the engine was torn out of the chassis. Brian's in hospital with compressed vertebrae, and the passenger that was in the car were flung out of the car and landed up 60 meters away with no helmet and shirt. Unbelieveably, he was only knocked out and broke his leg. Eye witnesses said it was a horrific freak accident. Not nice, but at least they're alive. Cause of the accident is believed to be mechanical failure of sorts. General concensus is a front tyre blow-out, but noboddy knows for sure at this stage.

Brian White is a legend in the local Porsche fraternaty and is perhaps one of the most experienced drivers in the club. Just shows you, it can happen to anyone. I saw Brian at his home on Friday, bought some tyres from him. He was tinkering on the 993 and told me he was doing the upcoming Fireball Rally. Not any more sadly, this car is now a mangled wreck and last I heard Brian is not doing so well...

Pics taken after the crash -

Spare a thought at least, will ya?

Thanks,
Pierre.

This is terrible news, Pierre. There have been a lot of discussions here lately on safety equipment for DEs, and I believe these pictures can help some of us with our decisions (it will for me, for sure). I hope Brian can make a good recovery.

Oh that is horrible Not so much for the car but for the driver and co-driver.... I really hope they recover completely.

One question though..what do you mean the passenger flew out without a helmet and shirt? Was he wearing them and he was strapped in when they went out? From the pics tha cage seems to have done its job... the seats are still there... did the belts broke?

......please convey our sincere wish for a speedy recovery..........these kinds of events have a sobering effect on the thrills of driving near the limit........at some point each of us has to decide whether the rewards are worth the risks involved.......having seen one directly in front of me whilst completing Nascar turn 1 at Pocono during a PCA race, and then watching a PCA club member lose his life in what was a less than spectacular crash at Limerock,i decided that early retirement was my best option.......

Very sad sight, if Brian does not have any broken bones he might recover well hopefully, even at 70.

The passenger flying out of the car tells me he was not wearing harness either? The seat is in place and the front windshield is intact. He is one very lucky guy anyway.
Hope they recover well.

This happened after I left, but yes, I'm told he was wearing a helmet and was strapped in secure. Ain't no way the marshalls would let him out otherwise. I can vouch for that, Kyalami has a top notch safety record and when I lined up in pit lane in a friends 911 they were checking every car and driver thoroughly.

What a tragedy. Hopefully they will recover quickly and be able to get back into a Porsche.

Awful pics. I'm glad no one was seriously injured, but that's about all there is to be glad about. My sympathies to all involved.
