Default Over-revving (first post)

Hi,

I've recently bought my first Porsche (1996 993 C4, and one very happy new owner) and have just joined the site. I had a look in the Search engine but couldn't find an exact match to my question -

Ocassionally (around 2 or three times on a half day trip) my 993 over-revs when it should be idling - usually to around 3000 rpm. On the motorway I generally dont notice this (except during a gear change) but it becomes a problem pulling into town and trying to idle at lights, behind slow traffic, etc. It seems to happen when the engine has warmed up.

The only solution I have found is to pull over and turn the engine off. When I turn it over again it idles perfectly. My Porsche garage loosened the accelerator cable but that didn't help.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Stu

Hi Stu,

First - Welcome to Rennlist!!!

Do a SEARCH for "cleaning the ISV".. If it's "sticking", it will have a similiar problem you describe. Usually - on a restart - it will "unstick it" and all seems normal until it's decided it wants to "stick" again....

Since it's an easy task, it may be a great place to start..???

Hope this helps!

I don't type faster than John D, I just don't have a day job or a night job, much less both.

I might add that, when I once had your problem, I "cleaned" my ISV with a bottle of Techron and an Italian tune up. I am just lazy.

I have never cleaned or replaced the ISV in the whole 115K miles of ownership. It runs like a gem and just passed CA smog with flying colors.

I had that happen once--started right after the car was driven hard for a very short burst after not having been driven hard for a very long time. A little more hard driving and it went away, though, and never came back.
