Smile Clunk Noise after installing Strut bar?

Hi all,

I hear a funny clunking noise at the front of my car whenever I go over a speedbump or some bumps on the road.

I noticed that this happens after I installed a strut bar on my car.

At first I thought it was due to my PSS-9 setup but my mechanic has confirmed with me that it was not due to that (they checked all nuts/links/etc.).

I'm wondering if anyone who have strut bar installed on their cars are experiencing the same thing?

Thanx in advance guys...

Pin,
I have been investigating suspension set-ups for my 1997 993TT. I was told by a tech today that the pss9 setup was not intended for street cars and that one of the problems was the top of the strut tower would need to be changed to metal whic was noisy.Could this be the noise you are refeering to?The tech was recomending the Bilstein sports with H&R springs. He was also stating that there was no need for the RS adjustable bars as the stock were more than adequate.I wuold welcome any advise as I am anxious to lower the car and improve the handeling.I am also considering the Ruf set-up.Does anyone have experience with their set-up? I appreciate your help.

Thanx for the inputs, guys.

I'll do a simple partition test next week: I'll take the strut bar out and see if the clunk will go away

And if not, I'll try the sway bar bushings (thanx Dan).

Jeffry, I really like my PSS-9 setup a lot. I've never driven an H&R/Bilstein setup before but I've driven an H&R Coilover'ed Turbo S before and I like that setup as well.

Robin and Viken has the M030 Springs (Robin has Eibach springs) and the Bilstein HD shocks and they like them a lot. You might want to ask for some pointers from them (both Viken and Robin posted their impressions of this setup recently).

Do an archive search - you will find virtually everyone on the Board who has installed PSS-9s strongly disagrees w/your tech. All reports are the PSS-9 works very well on the street. I'd go w/the actual real world street driving owners' experience.

Whether adjustable sways are for you depends on how you define "adequate."

As for me, I'm still thrilled w/my M030 w/HD Bilsteins for daily street & occasional track use. For my useage, I found the stock sways inadequate, but find the M030 fixed sways to be entirely adequate.

Suwipin, I would have to say it's probably sway bar bushings. I've had problems with my fronts. For some reason, and this is from my experience, that the bushings supplied with the RS sways tend to "push" out the lubrication after a period of time. Looking at them while the car is on the rack, the bushings have worked themselves dry. This has happened to me twice, and has recently started up again. I can tell you that I'm about ready to replace the rubber versions with another solution because it slowly develops into a more audible clunk.

Suwipin,
I have had the PSS-9's in since May and have had no clunking. Two weeks ago I installed a strut brace and still no clunking.

Actually, the front feels better with the brace. With the already stiff suspension it feels even more solid (particularly over uneven surfaces) and there is less squeaking from the windshield. I will see this weekend if I notice any difference on the track (SOW). From what I have heard, the differences are very subtle (probably too subtle for my novice experience level).

Hi Pin,

I had a slight noise (not quite a clunk) but it disappeared after I preloaded the bar another 1/4 turn.

I originally preloaded it about 1/2 turn, per suggestions of others (give it 1/2 of a turn after it begins to load up). Trying to determine when it loads up is quite subjective, so I think I was trying to be too precise.

After applying 1/4 more turn, all is well, no noise. BTW, I have the ROW M030 suspension and am using the factory strut brace.

Hi all,

I just took my strut bar out and the noise is now gone

Ok, who wants my strut bar?

At any rate, I just got back from the Concorso Italiano at Carmel Valley

I have never ever been this overwhelmed by a car event before in my life... It was amazing to see such a collection of cars in person... WOW! I'm emotionally drained now hehehe <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Here's one pic (of 250 others) that I took, can you guess what car this is?

And here's an easy one:
