Tramlining with 18's

i run my 1994 carrera with 18's - either Carrera 5 spokes or Turbo Twists with 225/40 at the front and 265/35 at he rear .Does anyone else experience tramlining ? and if so any tips on how to get rid of it or at least make it less obvious? Thanks

What do you mean either or? Do you alternate between the two sets of wheels? What condition are tires in? Do you have a drastic difference between front and rear tread depth. Usually, that causes tramlining. Otherwise, you need to look into your alingment settings.

Hi Viken, Thanks for your reply.
The Carrera 5 spokes are sumer wheels fitted with P Zero's and the TT's are my winter wheels fitted with Michelin snow tyres (i live in Switzerland). At the moment im running on summer set up - front tyres are brand new, rears are maybe 30 % used and i had the alignment checked and corrected when the new front tyres were fitted. The tramlining improved a lot after i got the alignment checked and corrected,but it is not completely gone. I have mesed arounf with tyre pressures but it hasnt made a lot of difference either. Im currently running 32 psi front and 40 rear. Thanjks.

I'd lower the rear pressure to bring it closer to the front's. I liked 32 in front, but I ran 35 on the rear. Try 34 or 35 first. Then, I would look at your alignment settings. Too much toe out or too much negative camber in front would cause some tramlining. Other than that, Id get a set of fresh rear tires or try to wear the fronts rather quickly.

Interesting point about toe settings, I never knew it has an impact on tramlining. I will run 265s MPSC in the front and will be looking into ways to reduce tramlining.. Thanks Viken..and swiss carrera.

Chance are the 265 itself will cause tramlining. These cars don't like tires that wide in front.

I get tramming with my MPSCs 225 fronts and 285 rears on my FIkse's when the roads are bad... it just goes with the territory IMHO.... + I have -2.5 camber in front and back.. so that doesn't help.. LOL

I'm a newbie, really. I've been told by others, including from numerous posts, that factory settings of 44psi in the back is too high. I run 36/38 or 37/39 at the suggestion of others on the board. I haven't had any problems though, as I've already stated, I'm a newbie (2-months with the car).

I figured I wanted least amount of wear to/from the track.. although I think the current pressure is 41 cold.... I just don't want to overwear them in the street.... I've been happy with the 34/39 HOT pressures at the track however..

I have 235s and 295s PS2s on 8 and 11 inch wheels and I don't get any tramlining. I didn't when I had 225 & 285s S02s on these wheels either.
I do think that adjusting tire pressures front to rear can alter the effect, as Viken mentioned. Try altering the differential F - R and see if it improves the situation.

Tramlining may also be tire specific. I had SO3s and had bad tramlining with my 993 and with my Audi S4, worse when new. I switched to Toyo T1S in my Audi, and it went away (same size tires) I get no tramlining with 18 in 235/285 MPSC, running -2.2F/-2.5R camber on the 993.
