I had squealing initally right after the cold for 5-10 seconds, then it started to squeal in the middle of the driving - it ended with alternator belt ripping into shreds. Check your alternator belt - see if it's all sound and good.
Best part of my ordeal was that happened on Sun early morning before second day DE tech inspection. My instructor - Jeff Curtis lended me his 12-point tool to hold the shaft and later his truck so that I can get to Advanced Autoparts to get replacement belt, Mark from Rezoom team helped me with removing/installation of the belt and I lost only one track session on that day. And it felt so good - both from getting to know people better - all of them are top-notch, and from fixing that stupid squealing.

Not the belt. Just had them replaced because I thought the squeal was from that. It stopped for awhile so I thought it was the belts. Now it has reappeared.
Tonight we go out for dinner and I find that if I keep the revs up when I come to a stop, it won't squeal when I take off. If I let the revs reduce to idle, when I start off again it squeal like hell until I get some speed then let off the gas then engage again and it stops and is fine until I stop again, and god forbid let the revs drop. Hmmm, does that narrow down the diagnosis Doctors?

Well, my belt was 6 months old when it ripped, perhaps 3 months, when it started to squeal. If it was not tensioned correctly it might be getting loose and squealing from slipping.

Alan,

Belts do stretch and need to be shimmed and tensioned appropriately-don't write it off as a potential cause so fast. Of course they do refer to our cars as Porkers in England-maybe your's is taking that seriously.

I took it in this morning so it is now in the hands of my greedy little mechanics Just kidding
We checked the tension in the belts and they were fine. He said that tightening them anymore could cause other problems. Well, it's out of my hands now. Will let you know the verdict.
Thanks fellas,

Glad you got your top sorted out - BTW, "Lovon the top guy" has my car now and is fitting it with my new top.

Fred, what about the new wheels? Any decision?

Fred's keeping his twists!

Just heard from Jeremy. He said the mechanic says the belts need tightening. Go freakin figure. I go in last week to have him tighten the belts. He looks at it, feels the tension as says, they are tight. Now he calls and says the mechanic tells him they needed tightening. So, I said, "I thought you said they were tight." He says, " That's why he is the mechanic and I am behind the desk. I waisted a visit last week, days of squealing and anticipation of potential costly repair. I am most aggravated and relieved at the same time. Oh not really, life is too good to be aggravated so, I am happy.

Thanks for all your input on this fiasco, I appreciate it.
Cya,

Well, since Alan answered, and this thread is all over the map,

The wheel question has not been answered, though Alan is a big fan of the chrome twists on my color car, and scoffs at the idea of 17" cup wheels. I am on the fence. If I could find a set in good shape for cheap I would buy them just to see what I think. I love the way the car looks on the original 993 brochure with the cups at the proper ride height (which I now happen to have).

I need to make a decision - or find the wheels - soon as my car REALLY needs new rubber. What to do? What to do?

Scoff, scoff, tisk, tisk...
Normally, I am not a fan of the blingers but I must say that they really do look good on Ocean blu.

Fagetabout the 17's. Tooooo small, they make a 933 look like the entry level model, IMHO. That's why they put the twist on the more expensive models. Fred don't do it... unless of course you want some track wheels.

What's going on here?? A slow day on rennlist??
Fred can't make a wheel decision, and no one here has yet suggested a set of $4,000 three piece wheels!!
It's already been 12 minutes!

Fred,
Here is to show you how the 17's look on a lowered car. Just to prove that I am not biased. Randy's wheels are even chrome like yours.
