Hi Phil,

I see your green dot is off...so you shoudl be in the mountain right now enjoying your car. I hope you have a better weather then here in Bordeaux!
May be I missed that info in the numerous posts, but how many Km had your car before going for the valve check?
I wonder if it would be worth it to do that when we do the clutch? My car is 120.000km and still has it's original clutch. Seen the difference you reported, I think this could be a good move.

62,000 km. I would recommend taking a measurement and then deciding whether or not corrective measures are needed (as they were in my case). If your engine does not feel responsive and free, it is advantageous to do it...

Already back? Hungry maybe?

Thanks for the info. This is my first Porsche, so I don't have any reference. It goes well, but how well...that's the question.
Sorry but one more question: the measurement is done engine in place? How do they do it? Do you know?

Nice pictures BTW.

Cheers

Is it me or did I just hear Steve emit a mad echoing cackle of laughter (followed by manic rolling of hands)

Oh BTW, hows highway cruising with 5th as top gear?

I have driven a couple turbos and I just really didn't see an obvious need to re-gear them. They have so much torque that it really didn't seem to bother them like the NA cars. If anything the Turbo needs taller first and second gears as it runs out of them so quickly.

Regarding the steel synchros: my assumption had always been that the steel synchros provide for a more "crisp" move through the gear ratios. Is this correct? I had also assumed that steel synchros could become permanently damaged if gear grinding occurs (hence not doing the 1st gear). I see that you did 2nd. Any concern regarding this gear? Also, you changed out your 5th to 6th but went with a steel synchro (thereby negating the cost savings from using the old synchro). Any particular reason for not utilizing the brass synchro on the top cruising gear?

Alex,
Steel synchros are more durable and for gears 3-6 about the same price as the stock ones. I have not heard the grinding issues you mentioned. My car has the short gears (RS Club Sport) and I would be happy to give you a ride at Putnam next weekend. It really does make the car feel quicker but on track it can be quicker (on the stop watch) because you are in a better part of the hp/torque curve. When I run to redline in 3rd gear and shift to 4th it barely drops 1000rpm. Where a stock car would drop closer to 2000rpm, IIRC.

Phil-

Didn't i once read that you were done with modifications?. That's o.k, I understand. I had a long conversation with my independant yesterday about doing the 3.8 with supercharger conversion to my C4S.....Now, just need +/- 20K!!!

Anyone local do this mod on 993 non turbo cars, like my cab? i dont care baout the excessive gearing to 180, if this could give me half a second in the quarter mile, that is great without touching the motor.
