thanks for the info Greg. Any reason for not adding 1st and 2nd gear steel synchros?

Alex,
Mainly cost, IMO. The second gear Motorsport synchro is a three piece unit that costs around $1500. If you aren't going to track the car a bunch and know how to downshift correctly then it doesn't make sense ($$) to use it. In a race car you wouldn't think of using the brass synchros IMO.

Bring ear plugs! Not sure who your instructor is going to be but I would be happy to ride with you as well. It is always a good idea to get more than one view point.

Thanks for the info. This is my first Porsche, so I don't have any reference. It goes well, but how well...that's the question.
Sorry but one more question: the measurement is done engine in place? How do they do it? Do you know?

Nice pictures BTW.

Cheers
They have to take out the engine to do the measurement. Takes about half a day...

Also, you changed out your 5th to 6th but went with a steel synchro (thereby negating the cost savings from using the old synchro). Any particular reason for not utilizing the brass synchro on the top cruising gear?
I just followed Steve W's recommendations. Just decided to go whole hog and get steel synchros for 2nd - 6th.

Ahhhhh,...you are a VERY perceptive person,...

As for cruising along in 5th gear, try that for yourself; simply quit using 6th gear for a few days and see if that works for you.

Cruising with 5th is fine. (In fact many times I would forget to shift to 6th...)

It was probably justifiable with the early turbos which had only 4 gears....

True, but then I tried out the 997 Carrera S and decided to do something to even up the score somewhat...

Very true, I know several that made that change. I think he was referring to a 993 Turbo though.

Actually, the 997 Carrera S is pretty formidable, since it not only has 355 hp but much shorter gearing than the G50/21 (or 996 for that matter). In fact, my gears are shorter but not by much...

Gear.....US/Swiss......Rest of the World ......
______(G50/20)________(G50/21)______997 S_______996_______Steve's Recommendation for my 993
1.......3.818..................3.818.......................3.91......... .......3.8................3.818
2.......2.048..................2.150.......................2.32......... .......2.2................2.25
3.......1.407..................1.560.......................1.61......... ......1.52...............1.68
4.......1.118..................1.242.......................1.28......... ......1.22................1.3
5....... 0.962.................1.027.......................1.08................1. 02...............1.1
6........0.775.................0.820.......................0.88......... .......0.84...............0.962

Final ratio 3.44:1 for all models
